Ballet in two parts and eleven scenes. Excelsior is a kind of choreographic composition which sings the praises of progress in science and accomplishments in keeping with the era of supreme optimism. The steam engine, the Booklyn Bridge, electricity, telegraph, the Suez Canal and the tunnel between Italy and France are all technical achievements which are shown on stage. It was premiered in 1881 but did not keep its place in the repertoire after the First World War. It was a great attraction on the programme of puppet theatres until 1956. The ballet was rediscovered in 1967
