The winter garden photograph by Reina María Rodríguez( Book )

1 edition published in 2019 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A meditation on the power and limitations of images, 'The winter garden photograph' began as an homage to a magazine, 'The Courier', published by UNESCO. Reina María Rodríguez used the magazine's photographs of faraway places to spark an investigation of the mental landscapes comprising her own, [in] contemporary Havana. ... With the original Cuban edition of this book, Rodríguez won her second Casa de las Américas Prize for Poetry. This edition includes ... an interview with Rodríguez, conducted by Rosa Alcalá."--Publisher
Materia prima by Amanda Berenguer( Book )

1 edition published in 2019 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Materia Prima is the first English-language collection of Amanda Berenguer's poetry. A key contributor to Uruguay's famed literary Generación del 45, Berenguer (1921-2010) stands among the most important post-World War II poets of Latin America, along with her now-legendary compatriot Marosa di Giorgio. Berenguer's poetry, stylistically and conceptually varied, ranges from classic, measured lyric to Dickinson-inspired gnomic utterance; from metaphysical and erotic rhetorical effusion to condensed and radically concrete experiment; from seemingly apolitical languor to pointed ideological dissent. The poems included in this edition span a large portion of Berenguer's career and are taken from eight books, and an additional section dedicated to her visual poems."--Publisher's website (viewed 2019 June 3)

"In 2002, while temporarily living in Europe (mostly Amsterdam), the poet Omar Pérez began writing in a notebook. Eventually the notebook became Cubanology, a book of days reflecting on three years of life at a remove from the island"--

The dissertation offers new insights into the benefits and costs of being multi-cultured and the shifting preconditions for belonging to the Cuban-American and Latino/a communities. Its form is a hybrid of multiple, writing genres. Chapters predominantly consist of cultural criticism either preceded or followed by personal narrative. To further push the dissertation's hybrid form, all chapters are separated by Intermedios (Interludes), which are either a poem or what I like to call a "short-short," a small prose piece. The Intermedios correspond to the material presented in each chapter. In Chapter I, my Introduction, "Earning My Accent Along the Academic Road," I trace how my academic journey through the Cuban-American canon has facilitated my cultural (re)connection. In Chapter II, "Multiple Perspectives: Cubanidad, Cubania, and Cubanness in Cuban-American Literature and Identity," I provide a genealogy of how Cubanness has been redefined, reconfigured, and reinvented throughout the 19th and 20 th centuries to demonstrate how the preconditions for belonging to the Cuban and Cuban-American communities have transformed. In Chapter III, "Native Tongue(s)," I offer an overview of how two prominent Cuban-American writers, Gustavo Perez-Firmat and Jose Kozer, approach language-use as a marker for cultural identity in the 1990's and new century. In Chapter IV, "Tony Montana: The Gangster Reinvented," I offer a comparative analysis of the 1932 Scarface film and its 1983 remake to demonstrate how the gangster character has been reinvented. In Chapter V, "Out With the Old, In With the New: Challenging Nostalgia," I offer literary interpretations of several works written between 1994 and 2001 by Cuban-American authors such as Gustavo Perez-Firmat, Achy Obejas, and Ana Menendez to demonstrate how their work challenges their exile predecessors' Cubanness, which is grounded in nostalgia. In Chapter VI, "Latino/as and Latinidad," I offer a discussion pertaining to the issues surrounding the term "Latino/a" and Latinidad (Latino/a identity). In Chapter VII, "The Pedagogy of Cuban-American Literature," I highlight the theoretical approaches I use, challenges I encounter---and the pedagogical strategies that developed from these tensions---when teaching a course on Contemporary Cuban-American Literature at the university level

The inclusion of multicultural literary texts from the U.S. with the teaching of English as a foreign language : a pedagogical convergence to foster EFL learners' intercultural competence by Luis Fernando Gómez Rodriguez( )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dissertation reports a qualitative case study research conducted in an advanced EFL classroom of the language program at a university in Bogota, Colombia, in 2010. The study proposes the inclusion of multicultural literary texts of the U.S. with the teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) as a means to develop learners' intercultural communicative competence. The study explores theoretical views of intercultural and multicultural competencies, provides teaching approaches to teach multicultural literature in the EFL context, and suggests appropriate literary texts to be studied in the language classroom. The voices and opinions of the EFL learners who participated in this study became relevant data to show how they read literary short stories in the target language and developed intercultural and multicultural competencies. The dissertation demonstrates that integrating language and literature in the EFL classroom not only constitutes a communicative reading practice, but the opportunity to construct intercultural awareness through the negotiation of literary meaning
