The art of freedom : on the dialectics of democratic existence by Juliane Rebentisch( Book )

22 editions published between 2011 and 2016 in English and German and held by 307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The concept of democratic freedom refers to more than the kind of freedom embodied by political institutions and procedures. Democratic freedom can only be properly understood if it is grasped as the expression of a culture of freedom that encompasses an entire form of life. Juliane Rebentisch's systematic and historical approach demonstrates that we can learn a great deal about the democratic culture of freedom from its philosophical critics. From Plato to Carl Schmitt, the critique of democratic culture has always been articulated as a critique of its Aaestheticization". Rebentisch defends various phenomena of aestheticization from the irony typical of democratic citizens to the theatricality of the political as constitutive elements of democratic culture and the notion of freedom at the heart of its ethical and political self-conception. This work will be of particular interest to students of Political Theory, Philosophy and aesthetics

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Confronting the overlap between patriarchy and architecture head on, Monica Bonvicini has attracted international attention with her video Wallfucking in which a naked woman rubs her genitals against a wall protuberance and with her site-specific installations using chains, steel and leather. "Architecture is the ultimate erotic act, carry it to excess", asserts an installation in this monograph
Theorien der Gegenwartskunst zur Einführung by Juliane Rebentisch( Book )

8 editions published between 2013 and 2017 in German and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

7 editions published between 2010 and 2016 in German and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

R.H. Quaytman Morning : Chapter 30 by R. H Quaytman( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 114 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book, the first museum publication to provide a critical overview of Quaytman's work to date, includes new scholarly essays that contextualize her practice and examine the evolution of her chosen themes. Illustrated with the artist's extensive archive of Polaroids, on which her work is based, the book focuses on the artist's process of formatting her paintings onto wood panels, organizing them into exhibitions that she refers to as "chapters," and her work's site-specific nature, created in dialogue with each exhibition venue's historical, architectural, or social aspects"--

Monica Bonvicini by Monica Bonvicini( Book )

8 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Architecture, power, space, gender, surveillance and authority are the issues that have animated Monica Bonvicini's work for the past two decades. Her installations, sculptures, drawings, and films often rise questions about how the built environment shapes, conditions, and controls viewers as subjects and, in the process, dictates our phenomenological, sexual, and psycho-social relationship to space. The book provides an overview of Bonvicini's artistic production reconsidering her past work, tracing its current trajectories, and creating a geography that charts the terrain of the artist's attempts to embody and negotiate the very same architecture of history it challenges

Tomma Abts by Tomma Abts( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in Undetermined and English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With a rigorous approach and self-imposed limitations to both scale and composition, Tomma Abts (b. 1967) has reinvigorated painterly abstraction and its relevance within contemporary art. Using a fixed canvas size and a vertical format, Abts deploys basic formal elements such as arcs, circles, planes, and stripes to create powerful works that are at once subtle and eccentric. This extraordinary book, designed in collaboration with the artist herself, is a substantial and deeply insightful treatment of her career to date and features sixty works made over the past decade. Essays not only contextualize Abts's work within an art-historical framework of methods, process, and style, but also examine her paintings' philosophical and psychological dimensions and their embodiment of a creative process that transcends the specifics of any particular work. The beautifully designed and illustrated exhibition catalogue examines both the art-historical framework of Tomma Abts's painting as well as its deep philosophical and psychological dimensions. James Rondeau is president and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago. Lizzie Carey-Thomas is head of programs at the Serpentine Galleries in London. Kate Nesin is an independent art historian. Juliane Rebentisch is a professor of philosophy and aesthetics at the Offenbach University of Art and Design in Berlin"--

Zweite Welt by Heiner Blum( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in German and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

3 editions published in 2018 in German and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dan Flavin, Lights by Dan Flavin( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and German and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the early 1960s, US artist Dan Flavin (1933-1996) began using commercially available fluorescent tubes in standard sizes and colours to create an unmistakable œuvre. Precision and careful calculation are bound together with a sensual aura. By choosing the tubes as the material for his works, Flavin signalised the increasing proximity of art with everyday life and the consumer world. The ways in which they are presented are derived from principles of minimalist sobriety."
