Does Socrates have a method? : rethinking the elenchus in Plato's dialogues and beyond( )

2 editions published in 2021 in English and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although ";the Socratic method"; is commonly understood as a style of pedagogy involving cross-questioning between teacher and student, there has long been debate among scholars of ancient philosophy about how this method as attributed to Socrates should be defined or, indeed, whether Socrates can be said to have used any single, uniform method at all distinctive to his way of philosophizing. This volume brings together essays by classicists and philosophers examining this controversy anew. The point of departure for many of those engaged in the debate has been the identification of Socratic method with ";the elenchus"; as a technique of logical argumentation aimed at refuting an interlocutor, which Gregory Vlastos highlighted in an influential article in 1983. The essays in this volume look again at many of the issues to which Vlastos drew attention but also seek to broaden the discussion well beyond the limits of his formulation. Some contributors question the suitability of the elenchus as a general description of how Socrates engages his interlocutors; others trace the historical origins of the kinds of argumentation Socrates employs; others explore methods in addition to the elenchus that Socrates uses; several propose new ways of thinking about Socratic practices. Eight essays focus on specific dialogues, each examining why Plato has Socrates use the particular methods he does in the context defined by the dialogue. Overall, representing a wide range of approaches in Platonic scholarship, the volume aims to enliven and reorient the debate over Socratic method so as to set a new agenda for future research. Multigrid eigenvalue methods for the neutron multigroup diffusion equations by Wolfgang Schmid( Book )

5 editions published in 1994 in English and German and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "Safety analysis of nuclear reactors strongly relies on numerical simulation of the reactor core. A central problem is the determination of the neutron distribution. This is usually done by treating neutron motion as a diffusion process and solving the stationary multigroup neutron diffusion equations. From a mathematical point of view these equations define an eigenvalue problem for a system of partial differential equations that leads to a generalized eigenproblem after discretization. Multigrid methods can be applied efficiently to this problem. To use here the full potential of multigrid methods they must be used very carefully because of the singularity of the problem. One approach is to apply multigrid as iterative solver within inverse iteration for the eigenproblem. Alternatively, multigrid may be applied directly to the eigenproblem when the multigrid cycles are adjusted carefully to the special type of equation. We consider both possibilities using ideas of Bank, Brandt, Hackbusch, and McCormick and compare the performance of the various methods for 2-D problems. It appears that a so-called direct approach may be an interesting alternative to inverse iteration."

Application of iterative methods for solving nonsymmetric linear systems in the simulation of semiconductor processing by Wolfgang Schmid( Book )

5 editions published in 1993 in German and English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "This paper presents a systematic comparison of recently developed iterative methods for solving nonsymmetric linear equations arising from the numerical simulation of semiconductor processing. A non comprehensive survey of the literature concerning iterative solvers is given including theoretical studies as well as current articles on practical applications. In particular, we consider the conjugate gradient-type algorithms CGS, Bi-CGSTAB and GMRES as well as the Broyden type secant method GB specially adapted to the linear case. At the moment these methods are among the most frequently applied techniques for the solution of nonsymmetric linear systems. The algorithms, including ILU-D (incomplete LU-diagonal decomposition) as a preconditioner, are given and their performance is compared on an industrial application within the process simulator MIMAS II. The simulation of semiconductor processing is an important and challenging area of industrial application and therefore an ideal field for testing the performance of iterative methods in real life problems. To highlight the physical background of this application, the physics of process simulation is briefly sketched."
