Ce documentaire nous emmène sous l'océan à la rencontre des créatures qui y vivent. Il nous fait côtoyer comme si l'on était poisson, les baleines, dauphins, requins, raies, araignées de mer, poissons multicolores et poissons aux formes les plus étranges, mettant en évidence la beauté de ce milieu, les moeurs fascinantes et la grâce de tous les animaux marins. Les réalisateurs souhaitent évidemment attirer notre attention sur les menaces qui pèsent sur ces trésors (pêche abusive, pollution, réchauffement climatique), afin d'encourager notre soutien à la protection des océans, mais ils s'abstiennent de montrer les tristes conséquences de l'empreinte humaine et se dispensent d'adjoindre au film un commentaire alarmiste ou moralisateur. Le commentaire ne se veut pas non plus scientifique, très discret, il invite juste, avec poésie, à admirer et à réfléchir. La musique de Bruno Coulais en revanche, composée spécialement pour les images, en soutient magnifiquement la beauté et amplifie l'émotion. Le petit livret d'accompagnement donne quelques informations sur certaines espèces montrées dans le film: l'iguane marin, la méduse dorée, le dauphin à long bec, l'araignée de mer géante, la seiche géante d'Australie, la baleine à bosse, le requin blanc.
