In his new role as mayor of San Francisco, Newsom decided he would do what he could to end discrimination in his city. On that day, the first legal same-sex marriage in California took place, uniting Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, founders of the first lesbian-rights organization and celebrating their 51st anniversary.
