Als Kind ist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (José Ferrer, "Cyrano de Bergerac") nach einem schlimmen Sturz zum Krüppel geworden. Er kann zwar noch laufen, aber seine Beine sind verkürzt und er ist auf einen Stock angewiesen. Frustriert vom Dasein stürzt er sich ins Künstlerleben von Paris und beginnt zu malen. Dabei ist dem Sohn von adligem Geschlecht sein Selbsthass so sehr im Wege, dass er Zuflucht im Alkohol und in Liebeleien sucht. Über Nacht wird er berühmt, als er ein Plakat für sein Lieblings-Etablissement, das berühmte "Moulin Rouge", malt. Glücklich wird er dadurch jedoch nicht. Eines Nachts bittet ihn die hübsche Prostituierte Marie (Colette Marchand, "Ungarische Rhapsodie") um Hilfe vor der Polizei. Toulouse-Lautrec taumelt in einen zerstörerischen Strudel aus Leidenschaft, Absinth, der Kunst, und dem zügellosen Leben auf dem Pariser Montmartre, kurz vor der Jahrhundertwende
