Bardic circles : national, regional and personal identity in the bardic vision of Iolo Morganwg by Cathryn Charnell-White( Book )

3 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Iolo Morganwg was widely known in his day as the 'Ancient British Bard' and as the founder of the Gorsedd of the Bards. This volume discusses the way in which bardism, Iolo Morganwg's enthralling bardo-druidic vision, served its creator's national, regional and personal agendas. By constructing a new and attractive national image for the Welsh, Iolo repudiated contemporary stereotypes of the barbarous Celt and enriched the ancient bardic tradition of Wales. Bardism's regional hierarchy also promoted the literary primacy of Glamorgan and, moreover, offered Iolo himself a means of shaping his own posthumous reputation. A selection of Iolo's highly stimulating writings on bardism also allows the reader to hear Iolo's own forthright opinions on these themes."--BOOK JACKET
