Di contro, il suo ex insegnante, l'ispanico Mr Guzman, fa di tutto affinché la ragazza si iscriva alla prestigiosa Columbia University, dove potrebbe vincere una borsa di studio e garantirsi un futuro radioso. Ana, da parte sua, combattuta tra le ambizioni e il volere dei suoi familiari, non sa cosa scegliere, anche se si rende conto che è difficile lottare contro la testardaggine della madre e la povertà in cui versa la famiglia. Accettato, come impegno estivo, il lavoro in sartoria, Ana scopre poco per volta cosa vuol dire appartenere ad un microcosmo di donne immigrate che lavorano in pessime condizioni, all'ombra delle grandi industrie; comprende le paure e i sacrifici della madre e della sorella, impara a non giudicare con sufficienza un mondo fatto di ignoranza, tradizioni, cultura popolare, ma anche di tanta umanità. Rafforza, soprattutto, la propria autostima, facendo delle sue forme non certo filiformi - in contrasto sia con l'immaginario collettivo di bellezza (dove una donna deve avere al massimo una taglia 46 per essere accettata) sia con quello tradizionale (per il quale una donna deve essere magra per trovare marito e arrivare vergine al matrimonio) - un elemento di forza e non di handicap.
