A scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners, in which a weekend at a marquis's countryside chateau lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haute bourgeois acquaintances. The film was a victim of tumultuous history: it was subjected to cuts after premiere audiences rejected it in 1939, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II. It wasn't reconstructed until 1959. That version, which has stunned viewers for decades, is presented here

A guileless script writer, Blair, is sent to find out why a collection of dubious Europeans are congregating at a remote ski hut in the Alps. The answer turns out to be a race to find Nazi gold buried in a ski lift at the end of the war. The main villain, an unrepentant Nazi, wants the gold to establish another Reich, but others in the group have more personal reasons, including the very British Mayne, who has stolen the identity of another soldier. The Contessa's position is deeply ambiguous. Like the men in the group, she disguises her true identity and tries to hide her past but it becomes clear that she was also deeply implicated with the Germans. However, she tries to ensure that Blair is not hurt by the others and saves his life by sending a search party when he is left injured and lost during a skiing expedition. At the end, the gold remains unfound. As the Contessa embraces Blair, she reveals that she knows where the gold is, but 'already too many people died trying to find it. I will never say.'
