Ende der 30er Jahre wird der jung verheiratete Jude Guido mit seinem Sohn ins KZ deportiert, seine nichtjüdische Frau geht ins Frauenlager. Bis zum bitteren Ende versucht der Mann seinen Sohn vor der Realität zu schützen, indem er ihm das KZ als Spiel darstellt. Roberto Benignis Gratwanderung zwischen Humor und Tragik, der Einsatz von Slapstick gegen das Grauen verunsichert. In diesem gefühlvollen Werk liegen Weinen und Lachen nahe beieinander, wobei das Lachen im Hals stecken bleibt.
