Un condamné à mort s'est échappé, ou, Le vent souffle où il veut = A man escaped, or, the wind bloweth where it listeth( Visual )

1 edition published in 1956 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The main title, A Man Escaped, alludes to the 'documentary' reconstruction of a successful escape by a Frenchman from a Nazi prison based on the actual case of Andre Devigny who was present throughout the filming to ensure accuracy. The element of predetermination and the alternative title, 'The Wind Bloweth Where It Listeth', alluding to the unpredictable gift of grace - suggests another level -that of a religious ceremony underlined by the use of Mozart's C Minor Mass. The two levels are brought together by Bresson's anti-dramatic form - a linear narrative without obvious dramatic emphases, matter-of-fact narration and the deliberate use of non-expressive acting by non-professionals in the role of psychologically blank models
