In the little island-state of Singapore, where the linguistic situation is richly diversified, there is a local Mandarin variety developing its own norms, in phonology, grammar and vocabulary. With the Southern Chinese coastal dialects shifting towards Mandarin, the character of the variety of Mandarin found in Singapore becomes more and more marked as Singapore Mandarin (SgM). Hence, the primary concern of this study is the characterizing of SgM, and how SgM emerged as a native variety under the complex contact condition of multilingualism and language planning in Singapore. Factors attributed to this emergence include direct influences of Southern Chinese coastal dialects, English, and Malay, as well as the fact that most of its users have been, or still are, non-native speakers of Mandarin
