A history of Israeli cinema( Visual )

1 edition published in 2014 in Hebrew and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Raphael Nadjari's extraordinary two-part documentary weaves together clips from more than 70 years of Israeli film with commentary from filmmakers, scholars and critics - including Amos Gitai, Joseph Cedar, Avi Mograbi, Yehuda Ne'eman, Menachem Golan, Moshe Ivgy, Ronit Elkabetz and Zeev Revach. Crafted for both insiders and outsiders, the film traces the evolution of the country's cinema alongside political and social history: part one spans the years 1933 to 1978, covering the overlap between the Zionist struggle to form a state and the propagandistic qualities of revolutionary cinema; part two, the shift to reality-based filmmaking in the late 70s, and the transition from the political films of the 80s to the more personal cinema of today. The most comprehensive and compelling record of the subject ever attempted, Nadjari's film reveals a cinematic national identity that is inextricably linked to the ever-changing emotional reality of the country

Sharon ʻAmrani, aman ha-dramah ha-mishpaḥtit, kol ʻavodotaṿ( Visual )

1 edition published in 2016 in Hebrew and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Raveh's film, 'Sharon Amrani, Remember His Name' (2010), reveals the young charismatic filmmaker, his work and the close connection between the two through clips from Amrani's films, interviews with family, friends, colleagues and teachers, photographs and home movies from Amrani's childhood. ... Yet Raveh does not only document the past, he documents a future that never will be: the films that Amrani did not live to create. Researching Amrani's documents, Raveh found several short screenplays, and sought out three directors of Amrani's generation to bring them to life on the screen. The short films are interwoven within the documentary: The Boat, directed by Nir Bergman, Albert and Ronit, directed by Dover Kosashvili, and Sabbath Eve, directed by Joseph Cedar. The warmth, intensity and drama of family life, issues of Persian ethnicity, tradition and the desire to break away from tradition, the competition and camaraderie of boys and men, the search for love, a persistent spiritual search and love of the sea; all these are reflected in the brief yet intriguing vignettes, imbuing the film with a sense of Amrani's vision as a filmmaker and how his presence might have influenced the Israeli film scene."--

Beaufort is at once a searing coming-ofage story and a novel for our times - one of the most powerful, visceral portraits of the horror, camaraderie, and absurdity of war in modern fiction." "Beaufort. To the handful of Israeli soldiers occupying the ancient crusader fortress. it is a little slice of hell - a forbidding, fear-soaked enclave perched atop two acres of land in southern Lebanon, surrounded by an enemy they cannot see. And to the thirteen young men in his command, twenty-one-year-old Lieutenant Liraz "Erez" Liberti is a taskmaster, confessor, and the only hope in the face of attacks that come out of nowhere and missions seemingly designed to get them all killed

Lebanon in the year 2000. Not far from the old seafarer''s fortress, Beaufort, is a military base with the same name kept by the Israeli army. This heavily guarded post has been here since the war in Lebanon in 1982. It is a symbol not only of Israel''s most controversial campaign for military control of Lebanon, but also of a sacrificial struggle during which many soldiers lost their lives. The Israeli troops move out of Lebanon, leaving behind their base at Beaufort. On the evening of May 24th, the base is destroyed, blown up by thousands of mines. The powerful explosion marks the end of 18 years of Israeli occupation. The film tells the story of Liraz Liberti, the 22-year-old commander of Beaufort, and his troops during the last few months prior to their withdrawal. The story does not center on the war but on their retreat. The base is still under enemy fire as Liraz prepares to explode the site, thus destroying everything that his friends and comrades have died for trying to defend
