Former U.S. ambassador Ryan Crocker gave the inaugural Distinguished Visiting Practitioners of International Affairs Lecture at the University of Idaho. He spoke on U.S. policy and involvement in the broader Middle East, an area he defined as extending from northern Africa to Pakistan. He described two lessons he has learned. First, that a country should try to have a realistic understanding what it is getting into before it engages in an international situation: preparing for what can be foreseen and anticipating aspects that cannot be foreseen. Second, once engaged, a country needs to be equally careful of how to disengage--recognizing that disengagement can have as many consequences as engagement. He encouraged young people to consider foreign service as a career. The lecture concluded with a question and answer period
