Shostakovich : a life remembered by Elizabeth Wilson( Book )

33 editions published between 1994 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shostakovich: A Life Remembered is a study of the composer Dmitri Shostakovich, based on reminiscences from his contemporaries. Elizabeth Wilson covers the composer's life from his early successes to his struggles under the Stalinist regime, and his international recognition as one of the leading composers of the twentieth century. She builds up a detailed picture of Shostakovich's creative processes, how he was perceived by contemporaries, and of the increased contrast between his private life and public image as his fame increased. --From publisher's description
Jacqueline du Pré : her life, her music, her legend by Elizabeth Wilson( Book )

23 editions published between 1998 and 2013 in English and held by 952 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"She was beautiful. She was a musical genius. She was married to another prodigious musician, the conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim. Their fairy-tale marriage turned them into a royal musical couple. In this definitive biography charts du Pre's meteoric career from her early identification with the sound of the cello to the achievement of her stardom by her early twenties, when she became a legend virtually overnight."--Provided from publisher
Rostropovich : the musical life of the great cellist, teacher, and legend by Elizabeth Wilson( Book )

5 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 535 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mstislav Rostropovich, a legendary musician of the 20th century, died just a month after the English edition of this book was published in April 2007. Wilson, a British author and former student of Rostropovich, gained access to a great deal of archival information about his years as a faculty member at the Moscow State Conservatory. The book proceeds chronologically through Rostropovich's life and career, with several interpolated chapters devoted to reminiscences from other former pupils. Wilson explores Rostropovich's teaching philosophies and methods and details his warm relationships with several leading composers of the day, notably Benjamin Britten and Dmitry Shostakovich. Unfortunately, Wilson ends her narrative in 1974, the year of Rostropovich's forced departure from the Soviet Union. She acknowledges that a study of the remaining 33 years of his life--during which he was principal conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC, and taught and performed around the globe--could fill several volumes, and one hopes that she will rise to the challenge of completing the biography of this great musician, humanist, and pedagog.
