The aim of this book is to make an important contribution to the development of new functional and structural ceramic materials, which exhibit enhanced performances and improved lifetimes and reliability, by fostering a better understanding of the mechanisms of their deterioration and failure under various stress conditions at various operating temperatures. Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).The work covers the topics of: basic failure phenomena; indentation fracture; fracture and fractography of structural, electro- and bio-/dental ceramics; fracture of fiber-reinforced composites; fracture of porous and laminated ceramics; defect-strength and microstructure - fracture toughness relationships; damage mechanisms in nanoceramics; fracture and fractography of multilayered ceramics and coatings; machining cracks and edge-chipping; and fracture and fractography of composites and nanocomposites. Overall, the contributions to this collection accurately reflect the current state of knowledge with respect to the fractography of advanced ceramics. The aim of the September 2008 International Conference on Fractography, held in Slovakia, was to exchange knowledge on damage mechanisms and fracture processes in structural, functional, and bio-ceramics at various operating temperatures, and to explore relationships between microstructural and mechanical properties of monolithic, composite, and nano-ceramic materials. Selected peer-reviewed papers from the conference cover topics such as basic failure phenomena, indentation fracture, and fracture and fractography of structural, electro- and bio- dental ceramics. Other subjects include fiber-reinforced composites, fracture of porous and laminated ceramics, defect-strength and microstructure, fracture and fractography of multilayered ceramics and coatings, machining cracks and edge-chipping, and fracture and fractography of composites and nanocomposites. Book
)
1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The aim of this book is to contribute to the development of new functional and structural ceramic materials, exhibiting enhanced performances and having improved lifetimes and reliability, by fostering a better understanding of their deterioration and failure mechanisms under various stress conditions and at various operating temperatures. The publication covers the topics of basic failure phenomena; indentation fracture; fracture and fractography of structural, electro- and bio- ceramics; fracture of fiber-reinforced composites; fracture of porous and laminated ceramics; defect - strength and microstructure - fracture toughness relationships; and damage mechanisms in nanoceramics. Overall, the book reflects the current state of knowledge with respect to the fractography of advanced ceramics. The uses of these materials range from the insulating tiles for the Space Shuttle, to lightweight automobile engine components, thermistors, varistors, knee prostheses and ceramic hip joints. During the past two decades, fractography has been intensively used for the characterization and understanding of the degradation mechanisms of advanced ceramics, and promises to be even more important in the future

Indentation hardness and fatigue of the constituents of WC-Co composites(
)
1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Abstract: The hardness, reduced modulus and indentation fatigue of the constituents of WC-Co cemented carbides have been investigated at a nanolevel using instrumented indentation in the range of applied loads from 0.25 mN to 50 mN. The influence of indentation load, microstructure, heat treatment and crystallographic orientation of WC grains/crystals has been studied. During random indentation a wide range of hardness values are connected with "mix-mode" indents, when under the indent, in its plastic/process zone not only one phase is present. Heat treatment has only a slight effect on the hardness of the constituent phases. An evident load-size effect was found during the indentation of WC grains but this was absent in the case of the Co binder. Significant influence of the crystallographic orientation of WC crystals on the hardness, indentation modulus and indentation fatigue has been found with enhanced properties in the basal plane. Highlights: Hardness, modulus and indentation fatigue of WC-Co constituents have been investigated using nanoindentation at 0.25 - 50 mN evident load - size effect was found during the indentation of WC grains but was absent in Co binder; the heat treatment of the systems has no significant effect on the nanohardness of WC grains; hardness, indentation modulus and indentation fatigue anisotropy has been found in WC grains different slip mechanisms in the basal and prismatic planes of WC grains were found explaining the identified anisotrophy
