This book presents a selection of papers related to the fifth edition of book further to the International Conference on Integrated Design and Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering. This Conference has been organized within the framework of the activities of the AIP-PRIMECA network whose main scientific field is Integrated Design applied to both Mechanical Engineering and Productics. This network isorganized along the lines of a joint project: the evolution, in the field of training of Integrated Design in Mechanics and Productics, in quite close connection with the ever changing industrial needs over the past 20 years. It is in charge of promoting both exchanges of experience and know-how capitalisation. It has a paramount mission to fulfil, be it in the field of initial and continuous education, technological transfer and knowledge dissemination through strong links with research labs. For the second time, in fact, the IDMME Conference has been held abroad and, after Canada in 2000, the United Kingdom, more particularly Bath University, has been retained under the responsibility of Professor Alan Bramley, the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the conference. The Scientific Committee members have selected all the lectures from com mplete papers, which is the guarantee for the Conference of quite an outstanding scientific level. After that, a new selection hasbeen carried out to retain the best publications, which establish in a book, a state-of-the-art analysis as regards Integrated Design and Manufacturing in the discipline of Mechanical Engineering

Research in Interactive Design presents an in-depth study of new product design methods. Interactive design is an original structured design approach that has recently emerged from transversal research. L'objectif de cette étude concerne la mise au point, par retour d'expérience, d'une méthodologie d'identification des données de calcul lors de la phase de préconception d'éléments de sécurité pour l'intérieur d'une automobile. Le support retenu pour la définition de la méthodologie est la modélisation du choc latéral (modélisation multi-corps). Après avoir identifié la problématique et son environnement, nous présentons une synthèse bibliographique concernant le thème du choc latéral qui aborde les principales notions permettant d'étudier ce phénomène. Nous introduisons ensuite le processus de modélisation mis en place au sein de la société FAURECIA en phase de préconception de composants de sécurité automobile. Nous en décrivons et illustrons les différentes phases. Ensuite, nous centrons notre travail sur le recalage de modèles numériques. Ainsi, après avoir illustré au travers d'un exemple les principes du recalage manuel généralement employée, nous introduisons une approche de recalage numérique basée sur l'emploi de méthodes d'optimisation et qui permet d'automatiser cette tâche. Par la suite, nous décrivons les critères fonctionnels que nous proposons et qui permettent de construire la fonction objectif du problème. Cette approche fonctionnelle du recalage fournit à l'utilisateur un moyen d'introduire dans la fonction objectif ses attentes en matière de corrélation. Afin d'identifier une méthode d'optimisation permettant de résoudre le problème ainsi défini, nous caractérisons le comportement de différentes méthode sur un cas type. Cette caractérisation nous conduit sélectionner la méthode de recherche tabou qui présente le meilleur rapport coût / qualité de solution. La validation de l'approche est réalisée sur trois modèles représentant des configurations de chocs différentes et dont les complexités sont différentes

Due to their slowness and their high cost, the classical methods of experimental characterization about the welded joints' stress carrying capacity are unsatisfying for industrial purposes. This work provides, for different materials and several sheet thicknesses, an alternative approach based on the construction and on the validation of a volumic numerical model of spot-welds and Laser welds using the finite element method. Firstly, two methods of welded joint's mechanical properties' characterization as well as damage and rupture parameters are presented. Secondly, using the material model of Gurson- Tvergaard-Needleman, the welds' behaviour under quasi-static and dynamic load cases has been simulated and compared with the experimental results. This comparison showed a satisfying correlation not only for the rupture's pattern but also for the "force vs. displacement" curve characteristic of the weld. Finally, using the Laser-weld's detailed model, two case studies have been realized to estimate respectively the consequence of geometrical and mechanical imperfections on the weld' stress carrying capacity and to evaluate the "transferability" of mechanical data from a given Laser weld's geometry to another one

The work focuses on potting materials for electronic components. A methodology to analyse the behaviour of cracks initiated in homogeneous materials or at the interface between different materials is addressed. An experimental procedure is described in order to measure the critical stress intensity factor of a homogeneous material. This procedure is then used to compare the crack behaviour in a bimaterial structure and to determine the results degree of validity. Hereafter a method is proposed to determine crack growth under subcritical loading conditions. In the case of a crack at the interface of bimaterials, a methodology has been developed to measure the energy release rate necessary to let the crack propagates. With the help of numerical simulations, the corresponding stress intensity factors are computed as well as the resulting mixed mode angle. The whole work realised experimentally and the developed numerical simulations allow to propose a methodology to analyse the behaviour of a crack placed in a multi-materials structure under thermo-mechanical loads

Prediction of crack growth in encapsulating material has a critical issue on the reliability of electronic components. To prevent the risk of material rupture or to extend the lifetime of these structures, experimental and numerical methods are developed within the context of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The present study proposes to extend techniques to epoxy resins. First, an experimental procedure using compact tension (CT) specimens is applied to characterise the fracture toughness of epoxy resins. This technique is then used to compare different epoxy resins and to quantify effects due to presence of filler particles. Then, a method is proposed to determine a fracture criterion for cracks under mixed mode loading. Experiments enable to extract the direction of crack propagation for given proportions of tensile and shear loading. Based on finite element methods, a numerical analysis is used to calculate the direction of crack propagation. A comparison between experimental and numerical results confirms the capability of FE codes to predict curved crack path. As well, fatigue crack growth is investigated with CT specimens under cyclic loading. Material parameters are identified in accordance with the Paris law. With the help of the commercial software Zencrack, a crack propagation can be simulated by a sequential approach, in which the crack length is updated step by step. 2D and 3D models are generated. The influence of the crack curvature through the thickness is described. On that purpose, a modified Paris law is proposed. The simulated crack propagation provides excellent agreements with experimental measurements

Une nouvelle méthodologie pour l'étude du délaminage dans les structures composites stratifiées est développée. Cette étude peut être divisée en deux parties : la première concerne la détection du délaminage dans les structures minces stratifiées. Dans le code de calcul éléments finis, ces stratifiés sont modélises à l'aide d'éléments de type coque. Ici, le problème de la représentation des mécanismes du délaminage dans un élément coque multicouche est abordé. La méthodologie utilise des critères en post traitement, qui sont basés sur la mécanique de la rupture liée à la mécanique de l'endommagement par le tenseur des contraintes effectives. La seconde partie concerne la prise en compte de l'influence du délaminage dans le comportement global de la structure. Cette influence est introduite par un changement local des caractéristiques mécaniques du matériau, de façon progressive durant la sollicitation. Ces effets intégrés provoquent une modification du comportement de la structure sur les courbes d'efforts et d'énergie. Des validations expérimentales sont menées pour des cas de traction statique, de flexion en statique et dynamique ainsi que des essais à basse vitesse avec un impacteur sphérique. La comparaison entre les résultats numériques et expérimentaux permet de conclure à une bonne corrélation et à la validation de la méthodologie. De nombreuses perspectives sont apparues à l'issue de ces travaux

Reduction of hazardous substances (RoHS) has banned the use of classical lead-containing solder materials in automotive electronics. Nowadays, electronic devices used in the car industry are submitted to harsh environments and solder joints are usually the cause of reliability problems. Temperature changes and humidity are well known to generate a considerable amount of the whole damage. Nevertheless, vibration loads also play a crucial but still unknown role in the damage generated on solder joints. The lifetime prediction of solder joints submitted to vibrations requires SN curves which are not yet available for these new solder materials. The present study proposes a high efficient method which combines experiments and simulation to obtain SN material curves based on real solder joints. Results are obtained and presented for two standard solder materials. The method is widely described and validated. Tests are carried out with different SMD chip resistors in order to verify that the obtained SN curves can also be used for smaller solder joints. The obtained material data enables a lifetime prediction based on FE simulations which has the advantage of being cost competitive and faster than testing on a prototype. Furthermore, the method requires no customized software and can be used on any commercially available FE code

The laser welding process is widespread involved in the industry. But this process implies distortion and high internal stresses, which affect the service life of products, due to the high temperature gradient. The simulation allows minimizing those effects by helping for the selection of the good geometry, material and process parameters without a lot of costly experimental tests. However, the development of a good simulation tool for the laser welding requires understanding the short-time metallurgical processes due to the very high heating rates, as it has a direct influence on the material law. A method using the knowledge of metallurgical processes is proposed to require less experimental tests to build the material law database for the simulation model and to take into account short-time metallurgy in the laser welding process modelling. In this aim, some experimental tests on a bainitic 100Cr6 with a Gleeble machine were carried out. Dilatometer tests to high heating rates and then, metallographic observations on the heating specimens are made to determine the material microstructure evolution under quick heating and the parameters of the Avrami equation describing the austenite formation kinetic. Then, Gleeble tests allow determining the material laws to implement in the simulation model

Dans le cadre de l'étude du comportement et de la rupture des liaisons composites rivetées, ces travaux visent à permettre d'améliorer la capacité des codes de calcul actuels à en proposer des modélisations pertinentes. En particulier, pour la thématique de la résistance des structures aux crashs, impacts et explosions, le mode de ruine par matage, présente un potentiel d'absorption d'énergie intéressant. La revue bibliographique permet révèle l'intérêt, mais également les fortes limitations actuelles, de la simulation numérique pour l'analyse et la compréhension fine des mécanismes pilotant la ruine de tels assemblages: limitations déterminant l'orientation des travaux vers une phase expérimentale préliminaire à toute étude de modélisation. Dans une deuxième étape de la recherche, une configuration expérimentale est définie, vérifiée, et adaptée. Les campagnes expérimentales statique et dynamique réalisées conduisent à confirmer la forte influence du nombre d'interfaces sur l'obtention du mode de matage dans un stratifié composite riveté. Ils révèlent par ailleurs une influence modérée de la vitesse de sollicitation sur l'effort supportable par la liaison une fois la rupture initiée. Dans dernière partie, un retour à la modélisation numérique est effectué, mettant en œuvre un modèle E.F. 3D d'une liaison composite rivetée à l'échelle mésoscopique. La représentativité et la capacité des modèles sont alors évaluées, et certaines informations utiles à la compréhension des phénomènes observés expérimentalement sont extraites des simulations. Des résultats encourageants sont finalement mis en exergue et des pistes d'améliorations expérimentales et numériques sont proposées

Cette étude s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une recherche exploratoire innovante (REI), financée par la DGA et vise à étudier le comportement à l'impact de matériaux composites à renfort Interlock. L'objectif final de ce travail est d'intégrer dans des blindages de véhicules terrestres, un matériau composite à renfort tissé Interlock de fibres hautes performances qui sera placé à l'arrière d'un matériau métallique utilisé pour fragmenter le projectile, ici un FSP, au moment de l'impact. Le matériau composite aura un rôle d'absorbeur d'énergie durant l'impact et permettra d'arrêter les fragments métalliques suite à la pénétration du blindage métallique par le projectile. La réalisation de ce matériau passe par l'élaboration des structures tissées Interlocks sur une machine à tisser manuelle puis à la mise en œuvre des tissus par techniques d'infusion. Les matériaux sont ensuite testés en condition d'impact réel. Un critère de comparaison a été établi en prenant en compte la vitesse limite de perforation (Vlp) du matériau et les masses surfaciques de chaque structure testée afin de ramener les performances balistiques à iso masse. Pour cette étude nous avons choisi de fabriquer trois architectures Interlocks ayant des paramètres de tissage identiques. Nous avons choisi d'utiliser deux types de fibres, du Kevlar® et du Vectran® pour chaque structures. La modification du procédé de tissage et de l'infusion des matériaux a permis de faire ressortir deux structures Interlocks en Vectran® présentant un critère d'impact équivalent aux structures actuellement utilisées dans le domaine du blindage de véhicule
