A scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners, in which a weekend at a marquis's countryside chateau lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haute bourgeois acquaintances. The film was a victim of tumultuous history: it was subjected to cuts after premiere audiences rejected it in 1939, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II. It wasn't reconstructed until 1959. That version, which has stunned viewers for decades, is presented here
La grande illusion by Jean Renoir( Visual )

5 editions published between 1937 and 2013 in French and English and held by 147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Renoir's meditation on friendship and chivalry in the midst of Europe's first mechanized war, was based on his own experiences as a French combat pilot and a prisoner of war. Renoir wrote the film as Europe slid towards World War II. Three French pilots, shot down during World War I, are drawn together during an escape attempt, despite different class backgrounds. Captain de Boeldieu is a wealthy aristocrat; Lieutenant Maréchal a self assured mechanic; and Rosenthal, a prosperous banker. Together they develop a daring plan to escape their imprisonment in a Bavarian castle. While escaping, Captain de Boeldieu is shot by the camp commander, but Marechal and Rosenthal manage to get away and eventually make their way back to France. When it was released, the film received an Academy Award as well as a prize at the Venice Film Festival, but due to the film's pacifist stance, it was banned in Germany and Italy

Shot down over the German lines, French Captain de Boieldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and his mechanic Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin) are confined to a crowded prison camp, until they are transferred to another detention center in a castle commanded by the crippled Captain von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim). Rauffenstein is the flyer who shot them down and is a man obsessed with attending to his noble lineage and the rights and obligations it represents; fatalistic and melancholy, he strikes up a strange friendship with his aristocratic prisoner, that brings the totality of war, national differences, and class differences into bold relief
