Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 322 is part of the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) and was designed to document characteristics of incoming sedimentary strata and igneous basement prior to their arrival at the subduction front. To accomplish these objectives, coring was conducted at two sites in the Shikoku Basin on the subducting Philippine Sea plate. Site C0011 is located on the northwest flank of a prominent bathymetric high (the Kashinosaki Knoll), whereas Site C0012 is located near the crest of the knoll. The resulting data, which include logging while drilling during IODP Expedition 319, provide a wealth of new information on presubduction equivalents of the seismogenic zone

One primary objective of the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) complex drilling project is to drill and instrument a series of holes across the seismogenic subduction system offshore the Kii Peninsula, Japan. Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 332 followed up on initial observatory operations begun during IODP Expedition 319 in 2009. This expedition focused mainly on engineering work, including (1) retrieval of a temporary observatory instrument installed during Expedition 319 at IODP Site C0010, which penetrates the shallow "megasplay" fault in the midforearc, and installation of a new suite of temporary sensors; (2) deployment of an upgraded temporary observatory at Site C0010; and (3) installation of a permanent observatory at IODP Site C0002 in the outer Kumano Basin, at the location of planned future deep riser drilling

The Iheya North hydrothermal field is located in the middle Okinawa Trough, an actively spreading backarc basin that extends for 1200 km between the Ryukyu arc-trench system and the Asian continent, in a transitional region between continental and oceanic crust. Because the Okinawa Trough contains both hemipelagic and volcanic sediment, in some places>1000 m thick, its hydrothermal systems provide abundant H2, CO2, CH4, NH4, H2S, and CO derived from sedimentary organic matter and from magmatic gases that could feed a variety of microbial communities, sustained by different chemolithoautotrophic primary producers within a range of subseafloor habitats (Nakagawa et al., 2005). The Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) is a coordinated, multiexpedition drilling project designed to investigate fault mechanics and seismogenesis along subduction megathrusts through direct sampling, in situ measurements, and long-term monitoring in conjunction with allied laboratory and numerical modeling studies. The fundamental scientific objectives of the NanTroSEIZE project include characterizing the nature of fault slip and strain accumulation, fault and wall rock composition, fault architecture, and state variables throughout the active plate boundary system. As part of the NanTroSEIZE program, operations during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 319 included riser drilling, analyses of cuttings and core samples, downhole measurements and logging, and casing at Site C0009 in the Kumano forearc basin as well as riserless drilling, logging while drilling (LWD), casing, and observatory operations at Site C0010 across a major splay fault (termed the "megasplay") that bounds the seaward edge of the forearc basin near its updip terminus. In addition, we drilled at contingency Site C0011 to collect LWD data in advance of planned coring operations scheduled for IODP Expedition 322

Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expeditions 314, 315, and 316 were carried out as a unified program of drilling collectively known as Stage 1 of the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment, a multistage complex drilling project. A transect of eight sites was selected for riserless drilling to target the frontal thrust region, midslope megasplay fault region, and Kumano forearc basin region. Two of these sites are preparatory pilot holes for planned deep riser drilling operations, whereas the others targeted fault zone material in the shallow, presumed aseismic zone. Expedition 314 was dedicated to in situ measurement of physical properties and borehole imaging through logging while drilling in holes dedicated to that purpose. Expedition 315 was devoted to core sampling and downhole temperature measurements at one site in the megasplay region and one site in the forearc basin. Expedition 316 targeted the frontal and out-of-sequence megasplay fault region in the mid-slope environment. Results on accretionary complex structure, lithology and age, physical properties, and state of stress, which are documented in full in the site chapters of this volume, are here synthesized across the expeditions
