Der bekannte Schürzenjäger Alexis wird auf die Festung Tossenstein strafversetzt. Unterwegs nach Tossenstein fällt er der schönen Räubertochter Rikscha in die Hände, in die er sich sofort verliebt, und die ihm - halb Beute, halb Treuepfand - seine Uniformhose abknöpft. Nach seiner Ankunft beauftragt ihn der Kommandant von Tossenstein mit einer Strafexpedition gegen die Räuberbande. Rikscha gibt sich nach einem kurzen Geplänkel geschlagen. Alexis erhält zur Belohnung die Hand der Kommandantentochter Lilli: nicht gerade eine Liebesheirat. Alexis und Rikscha sind untröstlich. Eine überraschende Begegnung zwischen den beiden jungen Frauen bringt wieder Ordnung in die Irrungen und Wirrungen der Liebe ... "Die Bergkatze" war der erste große kommerzielle Flop von Ernst Lubitsch, der den Film jedoch sehr schätzte: "Das ganze Unternehmen Bergkatze ging ziemlich daneben, obwohl der Film so viel mehr Ideen, Gags und Satire hatte als viele meiner anderen Filme. Aber er kam kurz nach dem Krieg heraus, und das Publikum war noch nicht bereit für eine Satire über Krieg und Militarismus. Ich fand dafür nicht den richtigen Ton." (Brief an Weinberg, 1947). Lubitsch hatte die Idee, den Film auf eine nur gedanklich getragene Groteske hin zu inszenieren. Für die Ausstattung engagierte er den Maler und Bühnenbildner Ernst Stern, der lange Jahre für Max Reinhardt gearbeitet hat. Er setzte Lubitschs Vorstellungen in einer Architektur um, die die Stilmittel des Expressionismus konsequent parodiert.
