Willenbrock by Andreas Dresen( Visual )

7 editions published in 2005 in German and Undetermined and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bernd Willenbrock is a used car dealer in the newly unified Germany. In the nascent free market of Central Europe, the former East German engineer seems to be the paradigm of the new world: a successful businessman, an owner of real estate, a generous husband. Prosperity seems assured by a steady stream of cash-only clients from Eastern Europe, and plans for a glitzy new show room are under way. Yet little by little, a series of ever-more menacing incidents -- an attempted break-in, the theft of several cars, a vicious beating -- erode his innermost certainties. No amount of locks and latches, it seems, can contain his growing obsession with external safety or stop the coming violence

Voices from the island( Visual )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Situated seven kilometres from the main land, Robben Island became notorious as one of South Africa's maximum security prisons. It was to this place of banishment that, following the Rivonia treason trial of 1964, some of the country's black leaders were sent. Here, over the years, they were joined by many other political prisoners, a number of whom were to figure prominently in the post-apartheid era. This film takes a look at the history of Robben Island, first as an asylum for mental patients and as a leper colony, and then as a place of exile for opponents of the governments of the day. A number of ex-prisoners talk about their years in jail, recalling the harsh treatment they received, as well as other aspects of daily life. These interviews are intercut with archival footage, photographic stills and documentary material. Amongst those featured are Walter Sisulu, Neville Alexander, Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, Steve Tshwete, Ahmed Kathrada, Andrew Mlangeni, Patrick Lekota, Mac Maharaj and Tokyo Sexwale

Kurt Gerron - Gefangen im Paradies( Visual )

3 editions published between 2004 and 2008 in German and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a documentary which chronicles Gerron's remarkable and tragic life story, in which his desire to create and his need to work in the limelight led him to both betrayal and his doom. A well-known Jewish actor and director in the 1920's and 30's, he was forced to direct Theresienstadt (1944, aka The Fuhrer Gives a City to the Jews), a remarkable bit of fabrication which portrayed one of the Third Reich's death camps as a safe haven for Jewish refugees. Gerron's reward for his hard work on the film was a one-way trip in a railroad car to a gas chamber. -- Cf. AllMovie database

For more than 150 years, many Afrikaners have cherished a dream of establishing an independent, racially and culturally exclusive republic somewhere in southern Africa. Though various attempts were made, this aim has never become a reality and today South Africa is more integrated than ever. Nevertheless, some people continue to hope and strive for what others consider an impossible ideal. Made before the 1994 election, this film travels along routes taken by the original Voortrekkers into rural South Africa in order to listen to ordinary Afrikaners expressing their often conflicting views on the political changes facing the country. They range from members of the AWB and the proponents of the white state of Orania, to supporters of F.W. de Klerk and one farmer who is a member of the ANC. With the exception of Mrs. Betsie Verwoerd, there are no prominent figures amongst them and no-one is identified by name
