SPAcENoCs : a Scalable Platform for FPGA Accelerated Emulator of NoCs by Guangming Chen( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The majority of modern high performance computing systems have employed on-chip multi-processors. As the number of on-chip cores soars, the traditional non- scalable communication infrastructures, commonly observed as shared buses or cross- bars, no longer accommodate the increasing communication demand by the modern multi-core chips. The newly emerging Network-On-Chip (NoC) interconnection scheme has provided a scalable, robust and power-efficient solution that also satisfies the requirements on both bandwidth and latency. A tool that enables swift exploration of the vast NoC design space is then in great demand to meet the stiff time pressure over research and development. Based on the work of AcENoCs, an NoC simulator designed on the basis of software and hardware codesign seeking for a large simulatable network size, the SPAcENoCs (Scalable Platform for FPGA Accelerated Emulator of NoCs) employs the Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) techniques to implement a simulator for even larger NoCs without sacrificing simulation speed and cycle accuracy which have been highlighted in the work of AcENoCs. This paper will focus on re-organization of the given software/hardware codesigned frameworks so that the TDM techniques may be applied. While both frameworks require re-design, the major efforts involve re- construction of the hardware framework by adding data buffers and affiliated logic to ensure the data generated in different time divisions are properly preserved and trans- mitted. Various design tradeoffs over hardware budget and simulation performance are also discussed and attempted in this paper. During the development process, the techniques of device virtualization and generic programming are introduced to overcome the verification challenges that are commonly seen in software/hardware codesigned systems. The synthesis results of various design options suggested that the simulation of a 9 X 6 network, more than twice the size of largest applicable size in AcENoCs, can be accommodated by the device. Based on the simulation result of AcENoCs, the estimated speedup of SPAcENoCs over software simulator for the 9 X 6 NoC is around 28-94X, twice the one achieved by AcENoCs in a smaller network. Low Latency Stochastic Filtering Software Firewall Architecture by Pritha Ghoshal( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Firewalls are an integral part of network security. They are pervasive throughout networks and can be found in mobile phones, workstations, servers, switches, routers, and standalone network devices. Their primary responsibility is to track and discard unauthorized network traffic, and may be implemented using costly special purpose hardware to flexible inexpensive software running on commodity hardware. The most basic action of a firewall is to match packets against a set of rules in an Access Control List (ACL) to determine whether they should be allowed or denied access to a network or resource. By design, traditional firewalls must sequentially search through the ACL table, leading to increasing latencies as the number of entries in the table increase. This is particularly true for software firewalls implemented in commodity server hardware. Reducing latency in software firewalls may enable them to replace hardware firewalls in certain applications. In this thesis, we propose a software firewall architecture which removes the sequential ACL lookup from the critical path and thus decreases the latency per packet in the common case. To accomplish this we implement a Bloom filter-based, stochastic pre-classification stage, enabling the bifurcation of the predicted good and predicted bad packet code paths, greatly improving performance. Our proposed architecture improves firewall performance 67% to 92% under anonymized trace based workloads from CAIDA servers. While our approach has the possibility of incorrectly classifying a small subset of bad packets as good, we show that these holes are neither predictable nor permanent, leading to a vanishingly small probability of firewall penetration. On the Effectiveness of Source Throttling for Networks-on-Chip in Chip Multiprocessor Designs by Ruixiao Ni( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In modern chip-multiprocessor (CMP) designs, with the increasing number of cores, traffic between different cores keeps increasing. Consequently, on-chip interconnection networks experience increasingly large communication bandwidth demand. This thesis focuses on Quality-of-Service (QoS) of Networks-on-Chip (NoC). NoC is considered as a scalable approach of interconnection network compared to conventional bus-based architecture. Like Ethernet, NoC faces common QoS issues such as bandwidth utilization and fairness. This thesis is a study on the effectiveness of source throttling for NoC, including fairness and overall performance such as program run time and packet latency. Source throttling is a well-known technique for traffic regulation. It is shown to be effective for bufferless NoC in previous studies. Due to different traffic behaviors and characteristics, however, it is not obvious if source throttling is effective for general buffered NoC. The first part of this research is a set of network simulations on various synthetic traffic cases. The results indicate that source throttling can reduce application runtime when (1) the network is congested, (2) there are dependencies among communication requests, and (3) the width of the dependence graph must be sufficiently large. The second part is full system simulations on public benchmark suites. Source throttling does not bring benefit for these relative realistic cases. Further experiment reveals that the aforementioned conditions are not satisfied. This explains why source throttling is of little use for general buffered NoC in CMP designs.
