Assessing the threat of weapons of mass destruction : the role of independent scientists by NATO Advanced Research Workshop "The Role of Independent Scientists in WMD Threat Assessment"( )

7 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 1,540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Assessing the Threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction is a collection of papers delivered at the Nato Advanced Research Workshop of the same name, which examined the role of independent scientists in assessing WMD threat. Such threat assessment has a profound impact on the policies of governments and international organizations. It raises numerous questions. What exactly is an independent scientist and what pressures threaten their independence? What role do cultural dependencies play within assessments? How do independent scientists produce threat assessments and what are the widely differing models used by different countries to facilitate the input of such assessments into policy? To address these and other issues, an interdisciplinary group of eminent experts and policy makers from twelve countries gathered to discuss ways in which the technical advice of independent scientists could be strengthened to aid governments and international organizations in forming policies in response to perceived threats. With papers covering topics ranging from policy making to chemical and biological weapons, nuclear threats and breaking the threat/counter threat cycle, this book illuminates an area of vital importance to the security and stability of relations between states, and the maintenance of internationally agreed norms." --Book Jacket

Aspects of network and information security by Evangelos Kranakis( )

6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 1,200 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Network security is concerned with creating a secure inter-connected network that is designed so that on the one hand, users cannot perform actions that they are not allowed to perform, but on the other hand, can perform the actions that they are allowed to. Network security not only involves specifying and implementing a security policy that describes access control, but also implementing an Intrusion Detection System as a tool for detecting attempted attacks or intrusions by crackers or automated attack tools and identifying security breaches such as incoming shellcode, viruses, worms, malware and trojan horses transmitted via a computer system or network. Today's computer infrastructure is exposed to several kinds of security threats ranging from virus attacks, unauthorized data access, sniffing and password cracking. Understanding network vulnerabilities in order to protect networks from external and internal threats is vital to the world's economy and should be given the highest priority. Computer and network security involves many important and complicated issues and this gathering of scientists will help not only in raising awareness but also in teaching participants the state-of-the-art of security techniques

Damage assessment and reconstruction after war or natural disaster by Adnan Ibrahimbegović( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book aims to provide a critical assessment of the current knowledge and to indicate new challenges that are brought by the present time in dealing with frequent man-made and natural disasters, resulting in damage to structures, infrastructure and human environment. The common ground for all problems of this kind from the viewpoint of scientific contents is the need to provide a quick assessment of the destructive action and its consequences, quick reconstruction, as well as the new basis for a sustainable development of affected areas. The present threat of the terrorist attacks or accidental explosions, the local military conflicts, the climate change that brings soil erosion or yet the destructive earthquake motion that occurs in previously inactive regions, are several examples of the kind of disastrous situations we address herein, along with the best way of reducing their negative impact
Coping with posttraumatic stress disorder in returning troops : wounds of war II by Coping with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Returning Troops NATO Advanced Workshop on Wounds of War( Book )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Military post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common and disabling consequence of war, terrorism and natural disasters which presents an increasing problem for service men and women around the world. It has been shown that those who serve in both combat missions and peacekeeping operations are at greater risk of developing PTSD as a result of the 'wounds of war'. These wounds may take the obvious form of physical disabilities, but 'invisible' wounds, such as depression, anxiety, stress and chronic pin may also lead to an increased risk of PTSD. This book presents full papers, focused on the key presentations from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, Wounds of War: Coping with Posttraumatic Stress in Returning Troops, held in October 2009. These papes critically assess existing knowledge in the field and identify directions for future action. The book addresses the five key issues of PTSD: vulnerability, diagnosis and assessment, prevention, treatment and associated disorders. While PTSD may be an inisible illness, its effects are certainly not invisible. Countries must work together to develop prevention and treatment strategies which ensure that service men and women everywhere are able to assimilate back into society to lead productive lives and ejoy the freedom they fought to protect. The purpose of this book is to contribute to this process
