Pacific herring coded wire tagging study : 2005 recoveries by L Flostrand( Book )

13 editions published between 2002 and 2007 in English and held by 158 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The application of coded wire tags (CWT) in Pacific herring began in 1999 and tag recovery from searching roe herring catches began in 2000. The primary purpose of the multi-year tagging study is to increase understanding of herring stock structure and inter-annual fidelity to spawning sites. Characterizing spatial and temporal patterns of spawning behaviour is critical to the effective management of the resource. This report summarises results of the 2003 Pacific herring CWT release and recovery work. The results from tagging spawning Pacific herring in British Columbia during March and April of 2003 and searching commercial roe herring catches in 2003 to recover tags are presented. Observed tag recovery data were related to roe herring catches and tag search efforts.--Document

Stock assessment for British Columbia herring in 2006 and forecasts of the potential catch in 2007 by J. F Schweigert( Book )

3 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Herring stock abundance in British Columbia waters was assessed for 2006 and forecasts were made for 2007 using the new age structured assessment model (HCAM) for the major stock assessment regions and for the minor stocks in Areas 2W and 27. All available biological data on total harvest, spawn deposition, and age and size composition of the spawning runs were used to determine current abundance levels. Additional model development and analysis with this implementation have been conducted and the results are described. In this document, stock assessments are presented for the five major migratory stocks and for the two significant minor stocks. The primary data sources for the stock assessments are spawn survey data, commercial catch landing data, and age composition data from biological samples of commercial fishery, pre-fishery charter, and research catches.--Document

Notes from working groups are also included pertaining to: 1) research projects, methods and results related to characterising stock status, 2) information related to characterising stock composition, structure and migration, and 3) industry trends, research interests and concerns."--Document
Herring multi-stock analysis: integration of tagging data and evaluation of alternative dynamics = Analyse de divers stocks de hareng: intégration des données de marquage et évaluation de diverses dynamiques by Vivian Haist( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This series documents the scientific basis for the evaluation of aquatic resources and ecosystems in Canada. The work presented in this document extends the multi-stock functionality of the herring catch-at-age (HCAM) model through inclusion of a tag-recapture module, and investigates alternative hypotheses about the natural mortality process and its impact on stock dynamics. The primary objective of the work is to investigate alternative stock dynamics assumptions in support of a future herring management strategy evaluation (MSE) project.--Includes text from document
A database for Pacific herring tagged and recovered in British Columbia from 1999 to 2006 using coded wire tag technology by L Flostrand( Book )

4 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A Pacific herring tagging study using coded wire tags was conducted from 1999 to 2006 through a partnership between the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Herring Conservation and Research Society. Samples of tagged fish were released during the 1999 to 2004 spawning seasons and tagged fish were recovered from the 2000 to 2006 roe herring fisheries by searching sub-samples of the roe herring landings. The aim of the study was to collect information to investigate trends in inter-annual spawning ground utilization and migration intensity. This paper describes the tag release and recovery sampling components of the study and the organization of the tagging study records."--Document
Gillnet selectivity data for the British Columbia herring roe fishery in 1976 by L. A Webb( Book )

3 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Samples of herring (Clupea harengus pallasi) were collected in Clayoquot Sound during the 1976 roe fishery with 2 1/8 and 2 1/4-in gillnets to evaluate their relative roe yields. For each fish, length, weight, sex, age, and girth'were recorded. These data are listed in summary tables

Stock assessments for British Columbia herring in 1990 and forecasts of the potential catch in 1991 by Vivian Haist( Book )

4 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents stock assessments from an escapement model and an age-structured model developed specifically for B.C. herring. Both models reconstruct stock abundance for 1951-90 and forecast pre-spawning abundance for the 1991 season. Forecasts of recruit spawners are presented as poor, average, and good based on historically observed means
Strait of Georgia juvenile herring survey, September 2005 and October 2006 by M Thompson( Book )

4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Purse seine surveys to determine the distribution and abundance of juvenile herring in the Strait of Georgia have been conducted annually since 1990, except for 1995. The main objective of the survey was to estimate the density and relative abundance of the juvenile herring population as a potential indicator of recruitment before they have joined tthespawning stock. In addition to recruitment prediction, the surveys have contributed to a better understanding of the distribution, abundance, and ecological role of herring in the Strait of Georgia."--Document

Stock assessment for British Columbia herring in 2002 and forecasts of the potential catch in 2003 by J. F Schweigert( Book )

4 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this study, herring stock abundance in British Columbia waters was assessed for 2002 and forecasts were made for 2003 using two analytical methods, an age-structured model for the major stock assessment regions and an escapement model for the minor stocks. These models have been applied to assess herring abundance since 1984 and changes were introduced to account for temporal change in the spawn index. All available biological data on total harvest, spawn deposition, and age & size composition of the spawning runs were used to determine current abundance levels. Forecasts of the pre-fishery spawning stock biomass are presented for both models
Stock assessment and recommended harvest for Pacific sardine in 2002 by J. F Schweigert( Book )

5 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) commercial fishery in Canada ended in the late 1940s as a result of declining abundance. In the early 1990s, Pacific sardine reappeared in British Columbia waters, and an experimental fishery began in 1995 to investigate the availability of sardines along the British Columbia coast, the marketability of the product, viable fishing gears, and stability & economic viability of the market for sardines. This report briefly describes the history of the experimental fishery since 1995, observations of sardine distribution & relative abundance in 2001, and recommendations for an allowable harvest in 2002
Metapopulation structure and dynamics of British Columbia herring by D. M Ware( Book )

4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this exploratory paper is to integrate existing knowledge about the dispersal & population dynamics of the five major British Columbia herring stocks into a structured metapopulation model. The model is developed and used to quantify the amount of straying that occurred during the 1977-98 base period; to assess the impact of straying on the dynamics of these populations & on their unfished equilibrium levels, which are used to establish the commercial roe fishery reference point; and to evaluate the impact of large year-classes on the dynamics of the metapopulation
