Under James Levine's thrilling direction the famous Met Orchestra is at its best in this first installment of Wagner's Ring cycle. From the dark, mysterious beginning in the depths of the Rhine River to the blazing end as the gods cross the rainbow bridge into their new home of Valhalla, this is a searing performance. James Morris is the commanding Wotan, the god who thinks he has everything under control, even as he unwittingly sows the seeds of his own destruction

Die Walküre by Richard Wagner( )

1 edition published in 2013 in German and held by 232 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner's powerful and wrenching tale of ill-fated love requires a cast of great singing actors, and that's just what this broadcast provides. Jon Vickers and Régine Crespin are the brother and sister who fall rapturously in love, only to be torn apart by death. The legendary Birgit Nilsson sings Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie of the title who is punished by her father (the magnificent Theo Adam as Wotan) for doing what he really wants her to do. Herbert von Karajan conducts his final Met performance
Symphony no. 2 : "Resurrection" by Gustav Mahler( )

3 editions published in 2014 in German and No Linguistic content and held by 209 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony started life as a single-movement tone poem called Todtenfeier (Funeral Rites). Completed in 1888 one year before Richard Strauss' Death and Transfiguration it echoed the composer's vision of seeing himself lying dead in a funeral bier surrounded by flowers. ... Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä have received praise for their previous Mahler recordings ('Vänskä and the orchestra are among the finest exponents of Mahler's music...', allmusic.com). The team is here joined by soloists Ruby Hughes and Sasha Cooke and the Minnesota Chorale in the deeply moving close to the vast and tumultuous panorama that is his Second Symphony."--Amazon.com

Moses und Aron : opernfragment in zwei akten by Arnold Schoenberg( Visual )

4 editions published in 2006 in German and Italian and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Moses und Aron (Moses and Aaron) is a three-act opera by Arnold Schoenberg with a German libretto by the composer after the book of Exodus. Unfinished at the time of the composer's death in 1951, it is--despite its unfinished status--widely regarded as Schoenberg's masterwork. From the sketchy outline of the play (1926) to its final version (1927) and to the inception of Moses und Aron as an oratorio (1928) and then into an opera, it was composed between 1930 and 1932. It is Schoenberg's response in dramatic form to the growing anti-Jewish movements in the German-speaking world after 1848 and his finest attempt at meshing his philosophical ideas with his artistry. It can be approached on many different levels: as an example of his twelve-tone system, as a work of biblical commentary, or as an attempt to work out the problems facing the Jew in the modern world
Rusalka : lyric fairy-tale in three acts by Antonín Dvořák( Visual )

3 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in Czech and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A highly-acclaimed production from the Bayerische Staatsoper, a powerful and fascinating reinterpretation of Dvorak's fairy-tale opera Rusalka. The young, up-and-coming Latvian soprano, Kristine Opolais's performance was rightly praised by the press. With her supple and velvety soprano voice, captivating physical beauty, and hauntingly moving stage presence, Opolais perfectly embodies the role of the water nymph who becomes a human being in order to find love
