What do a successful executive from suburban Malaysia, a religious radio commentator from rural South Africa and an Irish-born college professor from the United States have in common? They're all about to embark on the spiritual journey of a lifetime--the sacred Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca known as the hajj. One out of every five people on Earth--some 1.3 billion--practice Islam. Over 80 percent of these Muslims live outside the Middle East, but they share a single spiritual center, and each year two million Muslims visit the holy city during the hajj. During the five-day hajj, believers seek to become closer to God, ask pardon for their sins, and renew their spiritual commitment. The events of the hajj have long remained veiled from non-Muslims, who are forbidden even to enter the holy city of Mecca. But a team of Muslim filmmakers gained access to Islam's holiest place during the peak of the pilgrimage to document the event for National Geographic Television. This film reveals the many faces of modern Islam

More than one million Afghans were driven out of their homes by American bombs. Some 8,000 of them ended-up in Makaki, the desperately under-resourced Iranian Red Crescent refugee camp near the Afghan-Iran border. The 5,500 refugees with tents are the camp's lucky ones - the real tragedy unfolds among the people on the outskirts. These people have travelled for miles in the hope of getting food and shelter, only to be disappointed. Documentary film-maker Taghi Amirani gained rare access to Makaki to expose the plight of these forgotten refugees. 'If one American dies, ' says one, 'the whole world hears about it. I've lost my wife and child and now live in dirt, and no one cares'

"Twenty-five years after the Islamic Revolution, Iran is struggling for political reform. Some of the most visible signs of struggle can be found in the nation's media. This Wide Angle documentary goes behind the scenes at Shargh, one of Iran's new pro-reform newspapers, illustrating its efforts to report the news without incurring the 'blade of censorship'--an ever-present threat from Iranian authorities. Showing how Shargh has quickly cultivated a loyal readership among Iran's intellectuals, opinion-makers, politicians, and youth, the program features eye-opening scenes of daring young journalists covering Iran's controversial 2005 presidential elections. In addition, Judith Kipper discusses Iran with anchor Bill Moyers"--Container
