Dorothy Day was a radical social reformer who came to age in the bohemian Greenwich Village during the 1920s. She was a writer, an agitator, a drinking buddy of Eugene O'Neill, and the victim of unhappy love affairs. After a childhood in Oakland an dChicago, Dorothy lived most of her adult life in New York City, first as a journalist and socialist, then, after her religious conversion, as a Christian radical who set out to live the gospel in its purity. She founded The Catholic Worker newspaper and established houses of hospitality for the poor. Her causes led to confrontations with authorities and she was jailed several times. Her pacificism during WWII and the Cold War was considered shocking
