Phytoplankton Distribution and Productivity in Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet April 1987 Survey for the Marine Survival of Salmon Program by Canada( Book )

1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Applications of paleolimnology to sockeye salmon nursery lakes and ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska : proceedings of a workshop at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, October 8-9, 2008 by Misty MacDuffee( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paleolimnology is the multidisciplinary study of lake sediments as potential archives of the physical, chemical and biological histories of lakes and their watersheds. This report is a compliation of workshop proceedings presented at the Institute of Ocean Sciences on paleolimnological applications and these techniques in relation to salmon escapements and lake ecology relative to salmon harvesting and climate change. Abstracts are given for the participants' presentations, as well as summaries of recent technological innovations and recommendations for information presentation to those outside the field. A list of participants is also provided.--Includes text from document

Phytoplankton distribution and productivity in Barkley Sound Alberni Inlet : April 1987 survey for the marine survival of salmon program by E. A MacIsaac( Book )

1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Very little is known about the oceanographic factors affecting the early marine growth and survival of salmon, although their importance in the productivity of salmon is suggested by the large fluctuations shown by many B.C. salmon stocks. In April 1987, an initial survey cruise of Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet was undertaken to determine the magnitude and spatial variability of plankton productivity and abundance in the region immediately prior to the spring smolt migration. Concurrently, other researchers tracked the migration of juvenile sockeye through the system and conducted aerial mapping of surface chlorophyll and temperature to determine whether areas of high plankton productivity and abundance are present and correlated with the distribution of migrating schools of sockeye. This report presents primary production, phytoplankton biomass, and nutrient and particulate chemistry data in the area in late April. Depth profiles of in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence were also collected throughout the area along with CTD transects for physical oceanographic data
