The interface communicates with the database server using an ANSI standard protocol for database retrieval applications, called Z39.50 (see references). For example, instead of using Lotus Magellean for personal information, Verity Topic for corporate data, and Mead Data Dialog for published text, one application can access all three categories of information. The user isn't required to become familiar with several entirely different systems. In addition, since the interface consolidates data from many different sources, they can be manipulated effortlessly, virtually without regard to their origins. The Wide Area Information Server (WAIS, pronounced 'ways') project is an experimental venture seeking to determine whether current technologies can be used to make profitable end-user full-text information systems
