Barbara Hepworth : sculpture for a modern world by Barbara Hepworth( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From its simple origins in her studio, Barbara Hepworth's abstract sculpture has become iconic, taking pride of place in museum collections worldwide and outside buildings such as the UN headquarters in New York. Celebrated throughout her career in Britain, she was also a leading figure in international modern art. This major exhibition charts her progress from the earliest surviving carvings to the large-scale bronzes of the 1960s. Among the highlights are four large sculptures in sumptuous African hardwood - the high point of her post-war carving career - reunited in one room. Uniquely, this retrospective shows the way Hepworth's work was presented or imagined in contexts such as the studio, the theatre, the landscape or with architecture. Alongside sculpture, it features rarely seen textiles, photographs, collages and film, and selected works by her peers and predecessors from Jacob Epstein to Henry Moore.--[Site web de Tate]
Nature as artifice : new Dutch landscape in photography and video art by Maartje van den Heuvel( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the eyes of the world, the image of the Dutch landscape has boon shape-id by the history of painting. Internationally acclaimed artists like Brueghel and Ruisdael, and later Van Gogh and the early Mondrian created an image of a picturesque rural idyll that look root in the popular imagination. This is still the image of the Netherlands in mass-media and tourism." "Nature as Artifice shows a new and different approach in photography and video art to the landscape of the Netherlands. The eighteen artists presented here in effect replace that painterly vision with an up-front and sometimes confronting image of the Netherlands as the most artificial country in the world. Under the now familiar pressures of urbanization, globalization and the restructuring of the economy, as well as the need to keep the water at bay, the Dutch have extended the human control from the landscape to nature as a whole. This industrialized, urbanized, man-controlled and artificial landscape is the point of departure for the photographers and video artists whose work is shown in this book. They do not judge, but rather observe, analyze and register, and search for new beauty in their changed surroundings."--Jacket

Odilon Redon : literature and music by Odilon Redon( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and Dutch and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Odilon Redon (Bordeaux, 1840 - Paris, 1916) was a painter, lithographer, draughtsman and pastellist, as well as a writer, critic and musician. As so many symbolists he was fascinated by synaesthesia, the idea that an experience can be more intense when several senses are solicited together. Redon was masterful at interweaving the expressive powers of literature, music and the visual arts. By addressing some of Redon's favorite themes, this richly illustrated publication shows how he transposed literary and musical motifs into his own work and how he reinvented such themes over and over again creating new associations and meaning. Next to literary themes and subjects linked to classical drama, Redon chose topics that were inspired by, among others, Richard Wagner's and Robert Schumann's music. With more than 200 illustrations of works largely in private collections and the Kröller-Müller Museum, and with essays by renowned experts on Redon and Symbolism, this book provides extensive insight into the importance of literature and music in Odilon Redon's oeuvre. Seurat( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Georges Seurat (Paris 1859-1891) was the initiator of Neo-impressionism. With his paintings built up from countless tiny dots or points of paint and his great attention to scientific colour theories, he developed a new form of aesthetics. Seurat died young, at the age of just 31. He was only able to produce around 50 paintings in his short career. Through loans from museums and private collectors from all over the world, the museum has brought together 23 of his paintings and 24 of his drawings. It is the first time that so many of the painted and drawn works of Seurat are being exhibited in the Netherlands. Even 'Le Cirque' (The Circus), one of the showpieces at the Musée d'Orsay, will be coming to Otterlo. Seurat was one of the elite among the Parisian avant-garde artists, and exchanged ideas with like-minded artists and writers. Over the course of the nineteenth century, the French capital developed into a modern metropolis with wide boulevards, large parks, commercial entertainment venues, and a ring of suburbs. Seurat found plenty of subjects for his work. From the frivolous can-can depicted in Le Chahut to the Eiffel Tower, which he painted before construction work on the tower had been completed. From 1885 onwards, Seurat spent his summers at resorts along the coast of Northern France, from Grandcamp to Gravelines. There he produced tranquil seascapes, greatly contrasting with the lively city scenes. One particular highlight is the series of paintings that Seurat produced in Gravelines, the complete series is on show

De vroege Van Gogh 1880-1885 = The early Van Gogh 1880-1885 by Vincent van Gogh( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in Dutch and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When Vincent van Gogh decided to become an artist and taught himself how to draw and paint, he focused his attention on the people who had to work hard for their living, in humble workshops and on farmlands in all weathers. With his depictions 'of the people, for the people, ' Vincent strove to sincerely express his compassion for their way of life. Or, as he put it in a letter to his brother Theo: 'I say it again - work against indifference - perseverance isn't easy - but things that are easy mean little.' Over 120 works from the period 1880-1885 from the museum's extensive Van Gogh collection are on display. The emphasis is on Van Gogh's drawings. These in particular clearly show how he struggled to master the technique and to depict volume and movement in his figures. Moreover, he sought to depict 'life - itself and if necessary to draw - inaccuracies - that were - truer - than the literal truth."
William Degouve de Nuncques, maître du mystère by William Degouve de Nuncques( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2015 in Dutch and English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The oeuvre of Herman de Vries has recently received a great deal of attention. His inclusion as Dutch representative at the Venice Biennale constitutes a well-deserved crowning moment in an artistic practice that spans some fifty years. The Kröller-Müller Museum, in close collaboration with de Vries, is now devoting an exhibition to his so-called random drawings from the period 1970-1975. The random drawings were created in de vries' first years as a full-time artist and after he moved to the North Bavarian Eschenau, where he still lives today. The drawings derive from the organizing principles of chance and probability that are so characteristic for de Vries. Inspired by the agricultural research that he carried out previously at the Plant Pathology Department in Wageningen, de Vries began making random compositions, in which the elements' lines, stripes, fields, dots, circles' acquire their place in the composition through chance.
