Detroit, 138 square miles by Julia Reyes Taubman( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 130 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over the past six years, documentary photographer and architectural historian Julia Reyes Taubman has taken more than 30,000 photographs across the sprawled terrain of Detroit, ambitiously mapping out a comprehensive survey of a major American city. Photographing on the ground, in the buildings and by air and water, Reyes Taubman believes that when buildings and landscape are manipulated by nature and time they become more visually compelling than almost any architectural intervention. Reyes Taubman is not pessimistic, however: "It is not a disgrace but a privilege and an obligation to listen to the stories only ruins can tell," she writes in regard to this project. "They tell us a lot about who we were, what we once valued most, and perhaps where we may be going." As Reyes Taubman scrutinizes this 138-square-mile metropolis in transition, she pays particular attention to the scale and the solidity of the buildings that characterized the former "Motor City" at the height of its industrial wealth and power. More than a photographic saturation job of a single city, Detroit: 138 Square Miles provides contextual perspective in an extended caption section in which Reyes Taubman collaborated with University of Michigan professors Robert Fishman and Michael McCulloch to emphasize the social imperatives driving her documentation. An essay by native Detroiter and bestselling author Elmore Leonard addresses the social and cultural significance of the post-industrial condition of this metropolis. The volume's spine is specially treated with black ink to evoke the industrial character of its subject

United States of Latin America( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication documents the exhibition 'United States of Latin America', held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), in collaboration with the Kadist Art Foundation. Bringing together their shared and ongoing engagement with artistic practices from Latin America, Jens Hoffmann and Pablo León de la Barra have assembled one of the most significant contemporary survey's of recent art from the region. Hoffmann and de la Barra's project draws attention not only to the geographic territories of Latin America itself, but also to its relation within the wider scope of the Americas, and its position in a global artistic context. This book offers a framework for critical insight into artworks dealing with crucial social, industrial, or ecological concerns, and also for interrogating the very categories and terminologies used to construct the notion of Latin America. I cancel all my works at death by James Lee Byars( Book )

4 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Titled after James Lee Byars' famous proclamation, 'Triple candie's i cancel all my works at death' posits that Byars and his work are better misremembered than reexperienced. Triple Candie is a fugitive institution operated by two art historians that produces exhibitions "about art but devoid of it" that are realized without the involvement of artists. This book includes documentation of the exhibition as well as two recollections (by the artist's teenage sweetheart and a late-life acquaintance), essays on creative reconstruction and Byars' relationship to Detroit, a conversation between Triple Candie and a lawyer on the legal ramifications of artistic cancelation, and an assortment of quotes by Radiohead, Ivor Cutler and others that have nothing and everything to do with Byars and this show. The book is available in two different dust jackets. Exhibition: Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, USA (2014)

Considering some drawings by Stéphanie Nava( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It all began with the project for my residency in London. My initial idea was to work on a garden allotment in such a way that, somehow or other, the gardening would generate a parallel in the studio. As soon as I arrived, I put my name down for an allotment--and then I waited. (...) I began working on a plan -- which evolved into a model--of my future strip of land, using manuals and archival material to decide on the layout and the varieties to be planted. (...) So I decided to create this object on paper, life-size, and gave up on the idea of actually working the soil. This large-scale installation enabled me to bring together questions of representation relating to drawing: the relationship between plane and perspective, the issue of the one-off and the series, the line as physical cutting-up of space and the connection with genres: archival, technical and botanical drawings, diagrams, etc."--Page 4 of cover
