"Nineteen sixty-three. Elvis Presley has just completed filming Kissin' Cousins, a hillbilly romantic comedy of which he is instantly ashamed. His romance with Ann-Margaret has just become public knowledge, and Priscilla is on the warpath. It is a critical period for Elivs, a time in which he must sort out his own contradictory feelings and make life-changing choices."--Jacket
Ecuador : the secret art of precolumbian Ecuador by Daniel Klein( Book )

4 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This publication evokes the distant past of a remote and almost unknown country. Setting sail from the coast in great rafts, the indigenous inhabitants of Ecuador exchanged exotic shells along their routes and dispersed knowledge and new technologies among the peoples living between the great empires of Peru and Mesoamerica. The dynamic flow of cultures is palpable in the rich and varied iconography of stone, ceramic and gold artifacts found in Ecuador's diverse landscape. An extraordinary corpus of objects created over 5000 years is testimony to the excellence achieved by ancient artists, Within these pages the photographic sensibilities of Pierre-Yves Dhinaut, complemented by eight essays that weave together both scientific data and humanistic interpretations of Amerindian thought, transport the reader into the complex parallel worlds of these masters of Precolumbian art."--Jacket
Statuaire Babembe sculpture by Raoul Lehuard( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 73 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Richly illustrated, this monograph is the first devoted to the work of the Babembe people, who live on the banks of Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their anthropomorphic statues, carved from wood, are characterized by incisions representing tattoos, scarifications, or skin decorations that the Babembe use during initiation ceremonies. These striking works, many of which have never been published before, are adorned with fabric, tools made of horn or stone jewels, and eyes made from faience or shell. The works represent ancestral spirits who link the sculpture's commissioner with supernatural forces of the Babembe's animist religion. Here, scholars analyze the aesthetic quality, style, and meaning of each fascinating sculpture

2 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents the history of plank road fever in the U.S. during the mid-nineteenth century. It began in New York when George Geddes and other promoters highly exaggerated the durability of wooden surfacing. In a few years Americans built hundreds of plank roads across the country. This event illustrates how promoters spread false information in an era when there were few watchdogs against such claims. The report also provides insight into the motivations of promoters, who sought rewards other than monetary
