Wa : the essence of Japanese design by Rossella Menegazzo( Book )

12 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Through some 300 objects this book explores contemporary Japanese design: from everyday objects and packaging to interior design and lighting elements. Ultimately the book aims to explore the way in which Japanese design manages to harness its materials--whether natural or synthetic--and at the same time combine respect for tradition with forward thinking and experimentation. The objects featured were chosen because of their strong Japanese character and the influence this 'Japaneseness' has had on Western culture. Rather than following a chronological order or concentrating on the designers, this book focuses on the objects and is categorized by material, highlighting the strong link between design and material in Japan
Hokusai : the master's legacy by Hokusai Katsushika( Book )

4 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The undisputed master of ukiyo-e, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) is celebrated not only for his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji but also for his great versatility expressed in his treatment of all types of subjects: from landscapes to nature, portraits of kabuki actors, beautiful women, warriors and even ghosts and spirits, semilegendary beings and animals. Hokusai is also associated with restless change: of residence, of name (more than 30!) and of style. He had dozens of followers, and each of them represents an aspect of the master's vast oeuvre. These include Shinsai, Hokkei and Gakutei, who in turn influenced the following generation of artists. Through a selection of over 250 works from the Municipal Museum of Chiba and other Japanese collections, this publication offers a reading of Hokusai that also includes his legacy, accompanying and comparing his output with that of others who followed in his footsteps and gave life to new lines, forms and balances of color within the classic themes of ukiyo-e
Domon ken : the master of Japanese realism = Domen ken : the master of Japanese realism( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The breadth and diversity of this Renaissance man's oeuvre reveals untiring attention to and interest in the culture, art, faces, society, and politics of this country. With over 70,000 pictures taken between the 1920s and 1980s, Domon Ken is considered the supreme master of Japanese photography as well as the main exponent of realism as the only approach possible. Over the years he honed is craft, shifting from propaganda photography during the war to photography as a life's mission, in search of his own Japan: a fascinating and silent Japan of ancient temples, Buddhist sculptures, puppet theaters (where he took refuge during the war); the seductive and expressive faces of celebrities alongside the modest ones of street urchins; the poorest Japan of mining villages; and finally his most disturbing and modern work, portraying Hiroshima and its unhealed wounds. Rosella Menegazzo is a professor of East Asian Art History at the University of Milan. Takeshi Fujimori is the artistic director of Ken Domon Museum of Photography, Sakata, Japan. Exhibition: Museo dell'Ara Pacis, Rome, Italy (27.05-18.09.2016)
Kuniyoshi : visionary of the floating world by Kuniyoshi Utagawa( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 73 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recognized as one of the most interesting and vibrant artists of the Edo period, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is a major exponent of ukiyo-e. His fame is tied to the series of polychrome xylographs that illustrate the 108 heroes from the novel Suikoden (Brigands), a late-18th-century bestseller in China and Japan that described a band of brigands who defend those oppressed by injustice and government corruption. The book conjures imagery of violent, powerful warriors with muscular tattooed bodies--imagery that today inspires manga, anime, tattoo artists, and illustrators across the world. Kuniyoshi embraced the genre of warrior prints, but he was also interested in portraits of female beauties, kabuki actors, landscapes, children, and ghosts, another greatly admired genre in Japan. Nonetheless, his name is above all associated with Arcimboldo-like composite figures, figures within figures, and parodies of stories and battles. His images are fantastical, baroque, and rich in color and detail, with imposing characters and dynamic actions. This book surveys the work of a versatile and intriguing figure whose impressive technique birthed a school that continued for generations

Lost Japan : Felice Beato and nineteenth-century Yokohoma photography by Felice Beato( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An extraordinary collection of eighty pictures from the Alinari Archives located in Florence, Italy makes up a never-before-published sequence of images including portraits, landscapes, and rituals providing a rare entry into traditional 19th-century Japan. Felice Beato was one of the first Western photographers to enter Japan when the country first opened its borders (1853); he revealed to the Western world a country preserved in time and never seen before. In 1863 he moved to Yokohama and opened a photography school, the School of Yokohama. The photos of the book preserve the original photographic prints, manually colored black-and-white prints, that truly embody the spirit of that period. Images feature fascinating portraits of women in kimonos, geishas, samurai warriors, and interiors of Japanese homes and gardens as well as scenes of everyday life including tea ceremonies or the theater. Each photo is accompanied by text providing historical, anthropological, and artistic context."--Amazon.com

Hiroshige, l'art du voyage [exposition, Paris], Pinacothèque de Paris, 3 octobre 2012-17 mars 2013 by Matthi Forrer( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in French and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Comment regarder le Japon by Rossella Menegazzo( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in French and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2018 in Italian and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
