The visual language of Herbert Matter by Reto Caduff( Visual )

11 editions published between 2010 and 2017 in English and German and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Herbert Matter designed a series of cutting-edge Swiss travel posters that won international acclaim for the pioneering use of photo-montage combined with type. Always striking a balance between fine art projects and commercial work, the taciturn designer found his own unique language. He was inspired by Russian constructivists and taught by artists in Paris in the late 20s. With his photography he was adept in documenting the early furniture of Charles and Ray Eames, creating covers for Vogue, as well as documenting his artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Alberto Giacometti. As a filmmaker, he directed a critically acclaimed film "Works of Calder" about his good friend Alexander Calder, with music composed by John Cage. Later in life he was a professor for photography and graphic design at Yale University. In today's commercialized and oversaturated world, this documentary lets luminaries such as Robert Frank, Massimo Vignelli, Alvin Eisenman, Steven Heller, Elaine Lustig Cohen and others explain why Matter still matters. Through never-before-seen footage, personal photography and stunning graphic design work, the film explores the social and cultural impact of his personal visual language that influenced a whole generation of designer and artists
Ladislav Sutnar, visual design in action : principles, purposes by Ladislav Sutnar( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sutnar’s brilliant structural systems for clarifying otherwise dense industrial data placed him in the pantheon of Modernist pioneers and made him one of the visionaries of what is today called 'information design.' Visual Design in Action is a snapshot of Sutnar’s American period (1939-1976), and includes graphics for Carr’s Department Store, advertisements for the Vera Neumann Company, identity for Addo-X, and other stunningly contemporary works. He is best known for his total design concept for the Sweets Catalog Service and lesser known for introducing the parenthesis as a way to typographically distinguish the area code from the rest of a phone number. Visual Design in Action is a testament to the historical relevance of Modernism and the philosophical resonance of Sutnar’s focus on the functional beauty of total clarity."--Publisher's description
True print by Dafi Kühne( Book )

7 editions published in 2017 in English and German and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dafi Kühne is a Swiss designer who works with analog and digital techniques to produce fresh and unique letterpress-printed posters. Using very different kinds of tools--from a computer to a pantograph-for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Dafi Kühne embraces the labor involved in the entire process of creating a poster, from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary for how to communicate through type and form in a truly contemporary way. Not retro, his work is a clever response to the search for new possibilities of graphic expression: true print."--Page 4 of cover
A crude awakening : the oil crash = Le crash pétrolier( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Our civilization's addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with disaster ... the film visits with the world's top experts and comes to a startling but logical conclusion--our industrial society, built of cheap and readily available oil, must be competely re-imagined and overhauled. The world's oil supplies are peaking and the crisis of global shortage looms, we are running out of oil and we don't have a plan"--Container

Alberta's tar sands are sometimes called the Saudi Arabia of the North, an oil deposit so rich it's transformed Canada into an energy superpower. Albertans concerned about contaminated water, diminishing air quality and increased health risks say it's time to slow the pace down, and environmental groups are proposing steps to achieve a carbon-neutral tar sands
