Depicts a dreamer who dreams of himself dreaming, comforted in his dream by hands that do not exist or do not comfort him in his waking hours. The last seven bars of Schubert's song "Nacht und Träume" are heard and give the title to the piece. The cycle of dream and waking is repeated as in the lyrics to the song
