Atomically resolved microscopy of ion implantation induced dislocation loops in 4H-SiC by L. H Karlsson( )

During high temperature electrical activation of ion-implanted dopant species in SiC, extrinsic dislocation loops are formed on the basal planes of the SiC lattice. Investigations have suggested Si-based loops are caused in accordance with the well-known +1 model. Herein we apply aberration corrected STEM to resolve the atomic structure of these loops. It is shown that the dislocation loops formed during annealing of Al-implanted SiC consist of an extra inserted Si-C bilayer of the (0001) polar sense, which upon insertion into the lattice causes a local extrinsic stacking fault. The +1 model thus needs to be expanded for binary systems. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Optical properties of chiral nanostructured films made of Al1-xInxN using a new growth mechanism - curved-lattice epitaxial growth - are reported. Using this technique, chiral films with right- and left-handed nanospirals were produced. The chiral properties of the films, originating mainly from an internal anisotropy and to a lesser extent from the external helical shape of the nanospirals, give rise to selective reflection of circular polarization which makes them useful as narrow-band near-circular polarization reflectors. The chiral nanostructured films reflect light with high degree of circular polarization in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum with left- and right-handedness depending on the handedness of the nanostructures in the films
Phase stability of Crn+1GaCn MAX phases from first principles and Cr2GaC thin-film synthesis using magnetron sputtering from elemental targets by Andrejs Petruhins( )

Ab-initio calculations have been used to investigate the phase stability and magnetic state of Crn+ 1GaCn MAX phase. Cr2GaC (n = 1) was predicted to be stable, with a ground state corresponding to an antiferromagnetic spin configuration. Thin-film synthesis by magnetron sputtering from elemental targets, including liquid Ga, shows the formation of Cr2GaC, previously only attained from bulk synthesis methods. The films were deposited at 650 degrees C on MgO(111) substrates. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy show epitaxial growth of (000) MAX phase
