This love story, set against the backdrop of the later years of the seemingly endless Trojan wars, follows the plotline of the Iliad from Achilles' refusal to participate in battle to Hector's death, the play's tone lurching wildly between bawdy comedy and tragic gloom. Essentially, two plots are followed in the play. In one, during a truce between the Greeks and the Trojans, Troilus, a Trojan prince (son of Priam), woos Cressida, a Trojan woman (daughter of Calchas), and they vow eternal love and faithfulness -- but Cressida's father goes over to the Greek camp and exchanges her for a Trojan prisoner of war where Troilus attempts to visit her, glimpses the Greek Diomedes flirting with his beloved Cressida, and decides to avenge her perfidy. The other major plot of the play revolves around the leaders of the Greek and Trojan forces, Agamemnon and Priam, and Agamemnon's attempts to get the proud Achilles to return to battle and face Hector
