"Globalism is often discussed using abstract terms, such as 'networks' or 'flows' and usually in relation to recent history. Global Design History moves us past this limited view of globalism, broadening our sense of this key term in history and theory. Individual chapters focus our attention on objects, and the stories they can tell us about cultural interactions on a global scale. They place these concrete things into contexts, such as trade, empire, mediation, and various forms of design practice."--Jacket

Abstract: The art of communication and interaction involves a delicate balance of give and take. This body of work is about balance, or the lack of it, within social interaction, communication, and expectations. The purpose of this thesis is to strive for an understanding of the inherent complexities I find in communication and the actions that influence or change its effectiveness. Some of the questions that have repeatedly surfaced throughout this journey include: Is it more important to be right or get along? In what ways do gender and culture exacerbate issues of communication? How do I temper honesty with appropriate discretion? The process of questioning and sculpting enables me to explore my failures in communication and to develop an understanding of approaches that help resolve those failures. The heads I create are the space where discussions and ideas resonate
