The film's hero, a libertarian lawyer, dies four days before the film begins, leaving the case of a worker arrested for organizing a strike unresolved. His ghost watches his wife and son struggle to survive without him and is concerned that his client's case is being handled by a lawyer whose approach differs from his. Trying to overcome her husband's death, the attorney's wife becomes involved in the trial but there seems to be "no end" to her deceased spouse's pervasive influence. Set during the period of martial law in Poland, Kieslowski's film was not shown outside Poland until 1986
