William Tecumseh Sherman, 1853-91, includes a letter of resignation from the U.S. Army, 1853, letter to daughter Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" while teaching at the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning, 1860, and letters sent and received, 1864-91, from former soldiers, friends, and family detailing Sherman's life after the Civil War. Also includes transcriptions of letters written by Sherman to Lizzie, 1859-87, describing locations during the Civil War, inquiring about family members, describing life in Washington, D.C. in the 1870s, traveling in Europe, 1871-72, and detailing family histories. Letters were probably transcribed by a family member; location of original letters is unknown
