During the Civil War, Bill Hickok (Roy Rogers) is responsible for a gold shipment leaving California and he entrusts the delivery to his friend Gabby Whittaker (Gabby Hayes) and his niece Calamity Jane (Sally Payne). When the gold shipment is stolen by members of a European agent's gang, the blame is placed on Hickok and he is thrown into jail. Hickok is able to escape the jail, with the help of Calamity Jane, and then must track down the gold and also stop the foreign agent's plans of an assassination plot against President Lincoln
