Director Bunuel illustrates in this satiric parable that society, placed in certain conditions, breaks down from its internal contradictions and hypocrisies. As in his earlier film Land Without Bread, Bunuel portrays a society trapped in its own impoverished routines of tradition and class. At a post-opera dinner, pampered society guests discover that they are unable to leave the drawing room where they have gathered. As days pass without food, water or the ministrations of servants, their social facades crumble, giving way to bestiality and near cannibalism. Elegant civilized veneers are stripped away as the guests deteriorate mentally, physically and socially. In the final scene, after their rescue, the guests give thanks inside a church, but they are trapped once again as a herd of sheep enter the sanctuary. Bunuel has said that this film is "a metaphor, a deeply felt disturbing reflection of the life of modern man, a witness to the fundamental preoccupations of our time."

"Tells the story of an early Christian ascetic -- modeled on Saint Simon Stylites -- who has lived atop a pillar, surrounded by a barren landscape, for six years, six months, and six days to prove his devotion to God. But the Devil, in the figure of the beautiful Silvia Pinal, huddles below, trying to tempt him down. A skeptic's vision of religious conviction, Luis Buñuel's short and sweet satire is one of his most renowned works of surrealism"--Container
