"Retrospsepctive on the life's work of an artist considered an abstractionist visionary of the first order. The work of Claude Tousignant, from the 1950s to today, encompasses the full range of modernist expression. With his geometric shapes and solid colors coupled with his refusal to incorporate human or identifiable shapes, Tousignant pushed the boundaries to simplify the expression itself in the act of painting, incorporating huge circles, square angles and vivid colors in his pieces. Through a discussion of the exceptional qualities of his profoundly structured oeuvre, this publication outlines the artist's painstaking quest for the essence of art, not only with painting but also with watercolour, gouache and sculpture, and always with a rigour and an unwavering commitment to an ideal."--BOOK JACKET

Jon Rafman by Mark Lanctôt( Book )

4 editions published in 2015 in French and English and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jon Rafman recently caught the art world's attention with his ambitious photo project The Nine Eyes of Google Street View, a collection of hundreds of images carefully selected from blogs and searches. Hauntingly evocative, the work utilizes extremely personal moments to reveal how digital ephemera and media shape our desires and threaten to define our being. Since his appearance on the international art scene just a few years ago Rafman has garnered remarkable success and this first monograph, produced so early in his career, attests to the pertinence of his practice. Using a wide range of media Rafman blurs the boundaries between virtual and physical realities with works that can be either digital or material, found or made. By moving back and forth from video and photography to sculpture and painting, he brings attention to how such a transformation has become intuitive for us, changing the different ways in which we know ourselves, and how we perceive and relate to the world around us. Though Rafman rarely takes a moral stance toward the messaging behind his art, it consistently asks us to evaluate what it means to be human in the context of these new and ambiguous digital realms. 00Exhibition: Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal, Canada (20.06-13.08.2015)

Françoise Sullivan by Mark Lanctôt( Book )

4 editions published in 2018 in English and French and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At 95 years of age, Françoise Sullivan still works in her studio most every day. From her participation in the 1948 publication Refus Global - a radical statement by Quebec avant garde artists of the time - she has broken through boundaries as both an artist and a woman and her creations throughout the decades include paintings, sculptures, photographs, performance and dance. This retrospective monograph highlights the key role she has played in the history of modern and contemporary art in Canada. In addition to presenting the artist's diverse and multidisciplinary practice, the authors offer an in-depth exploration of some of the milestones in her career. The various styles and approaches adopted by Sullivan over the years are contextualized with the help of a large number of archival documents, both personal and professional. As a whole, the publication provides a fascinating portrait of a singular artist's trajectory through several decades of the changing nature of art. 00Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal, Canada (20.01.2018-20.01.2019)
Young & Giroux by Kenneth Hayes( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a stunning overview of the entire oeuvre of the contemporary art duo, Young & Giroux. Daniel Young and Christian Giroux have been making art together for nearly ten years. Their sculpture, public art and film installations are the product of an ongoing conversation concerning mid-century modernity, and the production of space and the built environment. This first in-depth monograph provides a career overview as well as an exploration of the duo's most emblematic project, Beta Boole - sculptures involving IKEA furniture. The term Boole comes from the 3D computer modelling operation of adding and subtracting simple forms to generate more complex ones. These pieces of furniture provide both a recognizable and vernacular set of domestic forms, which perversely realize the Modernist goal of universal design through the machinations of globalization
