Attorney General Price Daniel records by Texas( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The Texas attorney general functions as the state's lawyer; issues legal opinions as requested by the governor, other state officials, and state agencies; and represents the state in litigation, among other duties. These records consist of correspondence, reports, briefs, subject files, publications, political campaign files, press releases, speeches, clippings, photographs, reference materials, and historical documents of Texas Attorney General Price Daniel (1949-1953). The records are dated 1934, 1938-1941, 1944-1962, 1969-1970, 1978, 1986-1987, undated, bulk 1947-1952. Terms expanded from two years to four years effective 1975 (Senate Joint Resolution, 62nd, Regular Session). Records dating after Daniel's tenure as attorney general were added later at Daniel's request. Records dating prior to 1934 are probably copies of historical materials gathered for the Tidelands case. Subjects include Attorney General Daniel's defense of state claims to the Tidelands, offshore oil reserves in the Gulf of Mexico; and the Sweatt v. Painter case, in which African American applicant Heman Marion Sweatt sued the University of Texas School of Law for racial discrimination upon its refusal to admit him
