The rise of the modernist bookshop : books and the commerce of culture in the twentieth century by Huw Osborne( Book )

13 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The trade in books has always been and remains an ambiguous commercial activity, associated as it is with literature and the exchange of ideas. This collection is concerned with the cultural and economic roles of independent bookstores, and it considers how eight shops founded during the modernist era provided distinctive spaces of literary production that exceeded and yet never escaped their commercial functions. As the contributors show, these booksellers were essential institutional players in literary networks. When the eight shops examined first opened their doors, their relevance to literary and commercial life was taken for granted. In our current context of book stores, online shopping, and ebooks, we no longer encounter the book as we did as recently as twenty years ago. By contributing to our understanding of bookshops as unique social spaces on the thresholds of commerce and culture, this volume helps to lay the groundwork for comprehending how our relationship to books and literature has been and will be affected by the physical changes to the reading experience taking place in the twenty-first century. -- from back cover
Queer Wales : the history, culture and politics of queer life in Wales by Huw Osborne( Book )

7 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides varied perspectives on queer history, culture, politics and life in Wales. It addresses the queering of the Welsh language from the middle ages to the twenty-first century, and it acquaints readers with such figures as Felicia Hemans, Cranogwen, George Powell and Edward Thomas. It further explores forms of lesbian belonging, the possibilities of transgender Wales, the communities of queer Welsh television and film, and the many places of the queer Welsh 'home'. This book brings together for the first time work by a wide variety of authors from varied areas of queer Welsh culture; its chapters mark the beginning of what will be an ongoing discussion of sexual and national life in Wales, with essays that launch an important discussion of queer life and suggest that perhaps Wales has always been a bit of a queer place to live
