Native peoples and water rights irrigation, dams, and the law in western Canada by Kenichi Matsui ( )
9 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 1,070 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Economic developments in irrigation, agriculture, and hydroelectric power generation in western Canada at the turn of the last century challenged the way Native peoples had traditionally managed the watershed environment. Facing rapidly expanding provincial and federal power as well as private industries, Native peoples saw opportunities to protect their self-governing rights and explore reserve-based economy. Through a combination of field work and archival research, Kenichi Matsui offers an original and pioneering overview of the evolution of water law and agricultural policies in the Canadian west. By incorporating the history of water law philosophies, water development technologies, agricultural policies, and cross-cultural theories, Matsui constructs an interdisciplinary analysis of how both Native peoples and non-native stakeholders struggled for better rights and livelihood through litigation, political campaigns, and direct actions. The dramatic stories of early cultural, legal, and political conflict in interior British Columbia and Alberta featured in Native Peoples and Water Rights enrich our understanding of current Native rights disputes throughout North America

An Analysis of the Rapid Growth in Japanese Energy Demand Since 1987 ( )
1 edition published in 1990 in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The purpose of this paper is to identify the sources of the rapid growth in energy demand in Japan that has occurred since 1987. The analysis focuses on sectoral demands. In the industrial sector changes in total final energy consumption are broken down into three components, those brought about by energy conservation, those resulting from changes in the mix of industrial output and those brought about by changes in the overall level of industrial activity. Changes in the industrial demand for purchased electric power are similarly decomposed into four components. In the residential, commercial and transportation sectors the demands for individual categories of end-use energies are related to a series of relevant variables in a multiple linear regression framework. The estimated parameters are then used to decompose changes in consumption that occurred in 1987and 1988 into separate components caused by different factors. The paper concludes with some brief comments on the likelihood that the trends reported on in this paper will continue

Variations and regional differences in Northern Hemisphere snow cover frequency by Kenichi Matsui ( Book )
1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Abstract: This study analyzes the regional differences in Northern Hemisphere snow variation based on the satellite data from 1966 to 2001 in order to understand the relationship between the earth snow variation and climate change such as global warming. The satellite data are recalculated onto a two degree grid of monthly snow cover frequency from 25 km grid weekly average snow cover data. Because the ground meteorological observation stations are located in densely populated areas such as cities near airports in mid-latitudes and are inevitably influenced by urban climate effects, such as heat island phenomena, this study used the snow cover data based on the satellite observation. The variations of the Northern Hemisphere snow cover frequency in every month show a consistent decreasing trend of snow cover in summer, especially July and August, but not during spring. Previous studies indicate that snow reduction is the most obvious in spring due to a large decline between the early 1980s and early 1990s. However, this large reduction might only be a part of 5-10 year cyclic change in snow variations. The result of analyzing the snow cover frequency variations with Cluster Analysis show the 2 interannual phases, 1) May through September and 2) October through April. In May through September, most of the snow variation is similar regardless of which continent they occur on. On the other hand, in October through April, several large regions show different snow variations. Secular variations in the snow cover frequency indicate that some months have significant trends in snow cover frequency while others do not. In the months with large significant trends, many areas have the downward trend, the most obviously being the Himalayas and Tibet plateau. On the other hand, western North America shows a significant upward trend in many months. Principal component analysis of the snow cover frequency of the 7 to 10 regions in each month, October through April, shows two inverse trends. The two inverse trend components show 1) an inverse trend between the eastern and western halves of either the Eurasian or North American continents and 2) an inverse trend between the Himalayas and the rest of the hemisphere. In addition, the components showing the inverse trend between the eastern and western parts of continents tend to become weaker as approaching March and April. On the other hand, the components showing the inverse trend between the Himalayas and the rest of the hemisphere tend to become stronger as time going from October to April
