Es'kia Mphahlele is one of South Africa's most distinguished cultural figures and someone whose writings have had a great influence on people both at home and abroad. This documentary, made to coincide with the launching of the Es'kia Institute, presents an overview of his life and career, and assess the importance of his contribution to the development of the African renaissance. It traces his early life in what is now Limpopo Province, and his commitment to his role as teacher until the introduction of Bantu Education made it impossible for him to stay in South Africa. Thereafter followed many years of travelling and lecturing in West Africa, Europe and the United States, during which he wrote extensively on the concept of an African identity. Together with his wife, Rebecca, he returned to South Africa in the late 1970s, where he continued his work as a cultural activist. The film is structured around interviews with him and a number of academics, who discuss his work and its impact on subsequent generations. The commentary includes many extracts from Mphahlele's own writings, including "Down Second Avenue", and many of his essays. Its executive producer, Mike Stainbank, is the CEO of the Es'kia Institute
