First published anonymously under title: Vier Bücher Aesopischer Fabeln in gebundener Schreibart (Leipzig : Wolfgang Deer, 1748). The present edition was issued in fascicles from 1817 to 1819. Each fascicle contained eight quarter sheets, four with a single fable printed letterpress on one side of the sheet, and four etchings illustrating each fable. The edition was broken off before it could be completed, and the present copy with 80 fables and their 80 illustrations contains all that was issued. Another complete copy in the Albertina includes 9 additional etched proof illustrations by Vittinghoff, but these were never published. Thus Book I is complete in 25 fables, each with its illustration; Book II contains 16 of 25 (omitting 4, 8, 15-18, 21, 23-24); Book III contains 10 of 25 (omitting 1-2, 5, 7-12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 23-24); Book IV is complete in 29.
