Based loosely on Hans Christian Andersen's tale "The story of the mother", this surreal version of the tale is set in a violent and crime-filled European city. The city is run by a powerful business man called Grande Mierda (GM for short) (H́ector Alterio), who determines the life and death of the city's people. On his deathbed, GM grants his daughter's wish to have her estranged mother murdered. GM engages the character "The Detective" (Javier Bardem) to find the mother and also engages the evil "Dark Man" (Carmelo Gómez) to follow him. During the search, the Detective encounters a mother with a sick child. The mother follows him in order to bargain with GM to save the life of her child
